Why did the ref stop Wilder-Washington?

Watched this several times, Washington looked great for most of the fight, then towards the end, WIlder connected on some great shots. BUt I don't understand why the ref stopped it, Washington was on his feet, and wasn't hurt at all. Who else agrees?

It was a good stoppage, judging by those windmills someone other than Washington was going to get seriously hurt.

 

If Wilders involved, some people probably were only getting paid if the fight was stopped in the 5th.

 

Because Wilder had foam at the mouth, genuinely wanted to kill him and Washington didn't hit back.

 

Yeah but look at Washington, he's on his feet completely recovered, holding his hands up.

 

Yes but he got knocked down already shortly before, i wouldn't say it's the best stoppage ever but it's definitely
not the worst, i think it was reasonable enough.

 

I had Washington winning the first three rounds and also questioned the stoppage at the time, but from different video footage it was quite obvious that Washington had no idea where he was. He had to be held up by his cornermen as well, so it was only a matter of time before he got dropped again if the ref had continued this fight.

 

He stumbled and fell into the ropes after it was stopped, the fight was over whether the ref stopped it or not.

 

actually yeah it was a poor stoppage, Washington was walking away straight after them being broken up.

Wilder's power overrated somewhat.

 

Thats what I thought, but then again, Washington didn't see too upset that it was stopped, he didnt really protest did he?

 

The nichols stoppage was worse

"Worm" took Wilder's best shots flush on the chin with NO EFFECT and the ref called it.

 

Washington stumbles across the ring after being windmilled to death. You can’t see it on the televised view because the camera was focusing on wilder but the announcers speak about it.

Somewhere on YouTube there’s a video of an in-arena angle of the fight and Washington literally stumbles from one corner to the other and couldn’t stand up without the support of the ropes

Washington stumbled across the ring and fell into the ropes chest first after the stoppage. He was done. No sense getting the guy killed. Washington didn't even complain at the post fight presser. He just smiled and said he got caught.
