Why did Tunney never fight a black fighter?

He joined the Nation, not the Muslims. Those people aren't Muslims, they only used the name of Islam. Look it up if you think I am wrong.

 

Was it Corbett or Sullivan that said 'the only time any white man draws the colour line is to avoid black fighters', I'm not saying he couldn't beat them but if politics allows you to avoid allot of good contenders, then why not?

 

I'd like to read Wills side of the story

 

Didnt Wills avoid the fight because he didnt want to risk his n0 1 ranking that was earned the hard way, and risk losing the Dempsey fight?

Likewise, from memory, wasnt Tunney criticised for going after the aging Wills and not the younger challengers like Godfrey?

 

SuzieQ talks allot about Tunney avoided Godfrey, I don't know the whys and wheres of it

 

To be fair to Wills, he had been through two eliminator bouts which had purportedly been for a shot at the title and had not been given it.

He might have thought that Rickard was just going to keep putting him through eliminator fights untill he got the result he wanted e.g. a white No1 contender.
