After Don King got hold of Tyson, Tyson was not the same fighter. Cus wanted Kevin Rooney to train Tyson, but after Jimmy Jacobs died Tyson felt lost. Bill Cayton was good for Tyson, but Don King made Tyson think that he was a crook. Don King has destroyed so many boxing careers...........
I read that they had a falling out because Rooney said negative things in the press about Givens and got involved in Tyson's personal issues. As punishment Tyson's froze Rooney out with the intention of taking him back, but Rooney filled a lawsuit which lead to him being frozen out for good. sounds like it was Kevin's own fault really. He should have just been there for Mike's boxing and stayed out of everything else. I think all that lead to Tyson's subsequent low opinion of Rooney, its pretty clear he was a good trainer where Mike is concerned as the decline without him was so noticeable. Rooney knew Mike inside out as a fighter. Maybe Mike didn't like the fact he needed him, to be at his best? My view is that something would have happened anyway to split them up, Mike was turning into an ego maniac that wouldn't be told what to do, it wasn't even plain sailing during the prime years. Tyson would still disappear from camp. At some point Rooney would have been banished because he would have made Tyson train the way he always did and wouldn't accept anything less. then you got to factor in Kevin's own personal issues with gambling. Tyson wasn't the only one with demons. At some point the great Tyson/Rooney partnership would have come to an end. Their partnership was a beautiful thing, Mike used to kiss Rooney on the lips before a fight, a bizarre ritual you might think but a gesture of trust and unity between fighter and trainer. They were like brothers and Rooney did actually get away with telling Mike what to do, the last guy that had any form of control over him, until Mike lost control of himself....
When his then wife, Robin Givens, signed with Don King they pretty much sacked everyone in Tyson's previous team and replaced them with new ones. Tyson most likely didn't object about Rooney's release because Rooney was a very serious trainer who wasn't accepting any nonsense. Tyson obviously wanted to do things as he desired back then and didn't care to follow orders.
Tyson and Rooney had great chemistry. However, like all chemistry experiments, there is always a big bang at the end.
The catskill crew were also only mostly interested in mikes money and they definately did stuff to make him feel betrayed. There was a lot of infighting behind the scenes at the peak of the battles between Tyson, givens, Clayton, Rooney, Steve llott and don king. Based on my research Tyson only punished Rooney for the Bruno fight for speaking about his private life in the media, for siding with Clayton against Tyson and he even said in an interview that he would be willing to hire Rooney as his trainer after speaking to him in person and sorting out all their differences. Then rooney filed the lawsuit and since then there was no going back for tyson as he just got sick and tired of the money hungry *******s everywhere around him. You need to put yourself in his shoes back then, he felt his catskill managers were ripping him of financially where rooney had the highest trainers purse and Clayton had a high fee as well, he was already burnt dealing with the gold digging givens and don't underestimate the brilliant Hitler, goebells job done by Don king who brain washed Mike into believing that the White's were out to exploit the blacks. However hindsight is always 20-20 as time has shown who were that biggest leaches, I strongly believe that Mike and the catskill crew should have made up after letting the steam cool down. Ultimately the biggest problem was that Tyson had made a lot of money, achieved so much at such a young age, all the titles, all time legendary status at the age of 20-22, he just lost the drive to continue with the same passion, to continue the same intensity, the same road work, discipline, training and he just wanted to live life, party after working so hard, making money and boxing just became a job to get a pay cheque, the titles didn't matter any more. This was the defining moment. When a fighter losses the drive he is definately going to decline and Tysons post catskill performances reflected that
:rofl None of that happened. Rooney became an alcoholic AFTER Tyson left him. King convinced him to leave Rooney. Steve Lott has told the story several times.
In a recent radio interview when Tyson was asked about the catskill group including rooney all he said was that he didn't want to be in that environment anymore without cus being around anymore. Draw your own conclusions. There has to be more to the whole episode then the likes of rooney and Steve llott let on. There statements where they just blame Tyson for the break up are not entirely true, the truth has to be somewhere in the middle. Tyson even in his autobiography doesn't mention any regrets about leaving the catskill crowd.
His ***** of a wife at the time signed him with King and with King came a whole new training camp. Tyson didn't mind sacking Rooney at the time due to Rooney's serious training and Tyson clearly wanted to do things his way.
Tyson was surrounded by a lot of bad money hungry people. Around that time Don King had come around + Robin Givens & her mother... all filled Tyson's head with ****.
Upon being released from jail iron mike kicked don kings ass at the beverly hills hotel in broad day light obviously mike had an epiphany that don king was the chief of his downfall.
