The first fight he got knocked out by a right hand. Well, he got up, then the ref stopped it. The second fight, a UD loss, which I thought he should of won. That fight was famous for Mayorga taunting forrest to hit him, and he let him hit him 3 times in a row with a right hand and Mayorga just ate the punches.
First fight, it got exciting in round 2, Forrest was looking class, coming with uppercuts behind his jab, then in round three Forrest continued in the same vein and Mayorga just rushed him. I've never seen the full rematch.
I really need to see the rematch properly, it looks to me like Forrest is landing what normally would be scoring shots but the judges are giving it to Mayorga because he's taking them well and shtugging them off! Please don't tell me that's the story of the fight though, that's ****ed up.
Prety amazing that Mayorga was able to take those shots like nothing. Even when in the first fight Mayorga himself said Vernon hits prety hard. One of the most impressive and ballsy things you're ever going to see in the ring.
Definitely. That 3rd shot was brutal, Vernon just loaded up on that shot and Mayorga ate, albeit he saw it coming but still.
You will hear a lot of **** about mayorga, but if anything a prime welterweight mayorga is underrated, and too many people remember the slower, lumbering, face first caveman he became at the higher weights. Ricardo Mayorga during his prime and still training hard enough to make 147 was a beast.... He had fast hands, punches from all angles, an unrelenting attack, power, stamina and a chin that you couldnt dent. Vernon Forrest is a great fighter, however, his achilles heel are strong, powerful guys who get on him and start backing him up. (ike fight is another example) Forrest likes to control the tempo, the pace, and use his jab and 'viper' like right hand to keep his opponents at bay and it allows him to get into his zone and pretty much dictate the fight. Forrest is great at that. Mayorga didnt allow this.... When they met in their first encounter, Forrest simply didnt show this nobody from Nicaragua the respect he should have, and when Mayorga started to light him up and show him he was there to take those titles by brute force, Forrest decided to fight fire with fire, only his flames couldnt match mayorgas... Mayorgas deceptive speed, homerun punches and unstoppable momentum allowed him to walk through most of what forrest had to land some cracking shots that forrest couldnt take. The rematch, Forrest stuck to a gameplan of boxing nicely, but Mayorga showed he was more then a one trick pony and had the stamina to last with forrest, fighting the championship rounds the way a champion should. Forrest simply didnt have the strength to deal with Mayorgas wild and strong attacks, often sending Forrest around the ring during attacks, or with Forrest falling to the canvas under Mayorgas assault. It was a close fight however, and one in which Forrest did a lot of good as well. Both fights are worth checking out if you get the chance... good scraps.
mayorga was just a psychotic thug who kind of derived some pleasure from taking a beating......and thats what makes him one of my favorite fighters lol. his relentless, no holds barred style was just exciting to watch.
Not making an excuse but he had a shoulder injury that greatly affected his right arm though he still had power it wasn't what it used to be. Also, Mayorga was so wild that Forrest couldn't time him. Tito broke him down and went to the body to later finish to the head and land the final blow. DLH just beat the **** outta him.
Forrest lost the rematch b/c he was visibly petrified. Had he carried himself with confidence he would have won but he was running away at points and falling all over the place when Mayorga rushed. It didnt help that Mayorga let Forrest hit him 4 times flush just to humilate him...Forrest lost the battle before stepping into the ring.
