This was an extremely risky fight for him to take...I don't think this fight happens in the boxing climate of 2+ years ago. Ortiz would be maintaining an undefeated record vs soft opposition offering little risk. Instead, we get modern boxing classics w heavy action. Do you guys think boxing has changed in this respect? Guys seem to be taking a lot of "high risk" fights as HBO and the other powers are beginning to learn that fans want excitement from their favorite fighters not an undefeated record.
You gotta fight somebody sometime. Ortiz was steamrolling over a lot of lesser competition and he needed to be tested and I for one am glad he took this fight because it revealed how little heart and dedication Ortiz has for the sport of boxing. Fights like this are necessary to reveal what a fighter is really made of. :deal
HBO are just better with there match making, there got all money and they say fighter x fights fighter y or there is no fight or money and they will just find another fight to make.
Maybe. But I don't think HBO was like that 2+ years ago. Giving an unknown dangerous fighter a chance vs a young super prospect was super rare in the Don King/Bob Arum years.
Because Golden Boy doesn't manage their fighters like Top Rank does. Top Rank's promoters just make smarter decisions and bring along their fighters at the right pace and find the right opponents with the right styles that make their fighters look good. Golden Boy failed their young prospect tonight. It's the truth.
Yessir... nobody manages a young talent like the Bobfather and Top Rank does. They lead the way in that category.
and this is the way it should be. earn your standing in boxing by actually proving yourself not by fabricating a good record against handpicked oponnents. and being proclaimed as the next big thing.
If he doesn't take a risky fight then he's overprotected and if he does it's risky. Sooner or later he will have to take a test like this and pass it, now or later wouldn't be THAT different. It's these tests that improve a fighter.
They just think that Maidana was a bum with a blown up record that would make Ortiz look good, as simply as that.
Personally, I prefer it this way. And by putting his young guys on PPV all the time in showcase fights, Arum is mismanaging his own stable. The most important thing for young fighters is to get network TV appearances. Arum loves to ***** about GBP getting so many HBO dates, but he needs to compromise if he wants more slots. It's HBO's money, and they can do whatever they want.
Top Rank makes every move like an old man playing chess in the park. Yeah, it's "smart" for their long term interests and overall profits. But Arum's 'small ball-give me all the money-in-house' mentality almost always comes at the great expense of the most loyal fans with these ridiculous Top Rank PPV shows featuring outrageous mismatches. That crap sours the integrity of the sport.
That may be so...But if Top Rank/Don King looked to make the best possible fights in the past 30 years instead of relentlessly protecting their fighters and their records, I think boxing would still be one of the top 5 sports in the US. However, they alienated many fans with their tactics...Now, GBP and others are trying to regain those lost fans and regain fans of the new generation.
