That's what I thought when I first saw the matchup and maidanas 25-1 (24 ko) record. However, when you watch just a couple rounds of Maidana fighting on youtube, it was pretty obvious he's a competent fighter whose active and heavy handed and legitimate threat to ortiz.

    Exactly.

    1. Fans want the best fighters to fight each other
    2. Fans want exciting fights to be made

If neither can happen, it's a detriment to the sport and I respect GBP tremendously for helping the sport (weather that's their intention or not)

Ortiz was going to fight Kotelnik, so when he pooled out they picked up from German promoter Kole a guy with impressive record who was overboxed by Kotelnik(both Maidana and Kotelnik are promoted by Universum) That was wrong move. Probably they just underrated him, Ortiz looked really shocked and seemed to have hysterics in post-fight interview.

Golden Boy promotion didin't think that way they think, like amir khan on Kotelnik, he is the weakest, so if the weakest fighter beat Maidana and took his shot Ortiz that is stonger and on paper better shoud walk over him.

So what do you guys think would have happened if it was Ortiz vs Kotelnik? Different result? More or less the same? Kotelnik wouldn't have applied as much pressure and power on each punch like Maidana...

I didn't get that sense...I got the sense that HBO made the rules and 1 of the few fighters Ortiz could fight while remaining on HBO would be maidana. I think HBO is a lot to credit for the great exciting match we just saw and quite frankly tremendous year we've seen in boxing.

Fernando Vargas was 22 years old when he fought Trinidad and had defended a belt several times before that.

Ortiz just isn't that good. Nobody to blame for that.

Yea but Vargas didn't go from C class fighters to top contenders like Ortiz is doing.

Vargas fought Raul Marquez, Winky Wright, and Ike Quartey before he fought Trinidad.

Warren offered Kotelnik more $ than GBP greedies. Against Kotelnik he had more chanses because Kotelnik is not puncher, and no way he would get decision against hyped star at his backyard.

Sure Vargas went from fighting C class to top contenders.

Once you break into the top 10 they are all fairly evenly matched. Somebody's gotta come out on top.

Any comparisons between Vargas and Ortiz need to stop right now. Vargas had great defense when he was younger and his best punch was a left hook to the body. They are not similar at all.

    :deal

It's funny to think how Kohl, who knows his stuff, handled the situation.

    On the phone with Schaefer.
-Entschuldigung Richard, Warren offered more, Kotelnik can't fight Ortiz
-Sorry to hear. Got someone else bitte?
-Ja! Here's this crude puncher who lost to Kotelnik, and Argentinean with a padded record
    -Ja! warum nicht?

    Something like that.. :yep

Kohl bamboozled Schaeffer. It's like the Jorge Rubio mess with Prescott vs Khan all over again.
