Why did we let the media kill boxing?

If you sort out the Countless ABC titles then problems like cherrypicking wouldnt be much of a problem anymore because only legit challengers would be getting a shot at the title instead of 5+ world titles at each weight.

To be honest over here the UFC is a fringe sport compared to boxing. Its never ever mentioned in the sports pages. If there was a huge UFC fight on it wouldnt even be mentioned on the news over here whereas boxing would more than likely be.

Muthasuckas got greedy and they're less hungry (and less marketable). Absolutely awful combination. The kiss of death for boxing to the American public.

Boxing is still one of the most popular sports in the world. All the people that whine about it not being the same or it's dying need to wake up. Hatton-Pacquiao got like 900,000 buys here in America, two fighters not from America and there are not Heavyweights...far from it. Could Boxing gain in popularity of course it can, just get rid of some of the 17 division cut it down to about 10, 11 and get rid of the Alphebet titles, which will probably be phased out hopefully in the next 10 years. All of the talk about UFC kciking Boxing's ass really? I don't see it Boxing is easily more greater than UFC around the world, UFC is like Hockey it has it's little fan abse, but that's about it. Boxing is a lot more talked on ESPN, especially of late, Boxing is on big time channels where as UFC is on ****ing Spike TV. I'm getting sick of all this Boxing is dying crap, I go to a Boxing forum and even the fans are saying that WTF is that look around Boxing isn't dying.

One of the biggest culprits: Perception. Perception IS reality. We've got some tremendously skilled fighters fighting right now that would've been at least competitive, and at best great, in any other era.

But instead of appreciating it, we're being subconsciously hammered into nitpicking flaws out of fighters instead. The biggest factor of this that nobody talks about, is the announcing. When you listen to fights announced in other counties outside the US, they typically sound like they genuinely want to be there. Not the case here, where the guys calling fights sound like they're just playing solitaire on their computers and rarely, if ever, show any actual emotion or even bother with proper play by play.

The real dearth of talent isn't in the ring- it's at the broadcasting table. A little passion in announcing would go a long way towards changing the image fans have of the sport. If the people announcing are biased, bored, crotchety, and nitpicky? That's exactly what you'll get out of many fans.

The boxing media is full of all sorts of strange, bitter, negative personalities. Killjoys.

Most all the maintstream boxing writers **** on the sport, almost all of them say HWT division is at an all time low. Some of the biggest name writers write this garbage. THey are stupidly shitting on the great sport instead of celebrating it. I agree great post P Power, most of the big name boxing writers should be hauled off.

I mean the guy from the New York Daily News actually wrote that Lennox Lewis didn't fit the stereotype he had for what a HWT champ should be, he didn't talk or act like one. If that isn't supremely inept boxing writing...

but fraud duckweather deserves all the criticism he gets and more. that fraud cheated boxing out of the current welterweight division turning into perhaps an even more golden era than the 80s with Duran, SRL, Hearns. Gayweather ducked Margarito, Cotto, Mosley and he's gonna try to avoid Pacquiao too. All these fights should have been made, and Margarito, Cotto and Mosely would have been much bigger household names with W's over chickenweather.

The problem is that those parasitic organizations are dug in too deep. We can talk about getting rid of them but it'll never happen. I suppose the Ring Belt is the most legit but even they're not impervious to the problems that occur in the sport. They're not all bad though. Mediocre fighters can say they were once world champions too before the sanctioning body rips them off and strips them of their belts.

I swear that there have been so many times in which I would hear commentators talk about how the heavyweight division is so weak and that the titles are just up for grabs. Both couldn't be further from the truth as there are plenty of very good fighters and the ceiling is extremely high as the Klitschkos won't be losing their title belts anytime soon. Even Valuev wouldn't be a walk in the park to win a belt. He's nothing special but you gotta show up to beat him cuz of his size. Nobody's gonna walk through him.

Too many belts, too many champions, too many weight classes, promoters, too much pay per view with way too weak cards, boring armature system that creates no excitement over new fighters. I can keep going. When it comes to whats hurting boxing the media is way way down the list.

Back in the day, boxing was extreamly popular on Black and White TV, back when there was 4
    This content is protected
the channel that had lots of boxing on went broke.
That left only NBC, CBS and ABC.
By 1959 boxing was only on Calcacade Pararde of Sports and perhaps a champion ship fight, every once in a while....one must remember there were but 8 Champs...
What took Boxing from the 2nd after Baseball to second after MMA, was the Nealson TV rating box.
    They were not in bars.
Most guys...back when you could have a few more beers than today, most guys drove to a bar and watched the fights.....

At home the battle was lost. The wife was watching I love ****ing Lucy...so less and less boxing was televised....and that was back when the news papers still had the tale of the tape, with all vital mesurments there to make a sound bet....that too is gone.

Pay for View boxing....like TV alone delevered a lot of **** fights, but unlike TV it cost a lot...

I'd like to go a little deeper into one reason I mentioned. The Armature system! This tip tap hit the guy on the top of the head **** has to go. Armature boxing is a total joke no one cares it isn't even really a televised Olympic event anymore when an amateur makes the move to the pros no one gives a damn.

Quick question if college football was flag do you think professional football would even close to as popular as it is?

It's because no one can relate to who is the champ. Each weight can have 5 guys claiming to be the champ. The damn ABC is killing it.

Without a face a fan can latch onto boxing will never get back into mainstream sport. The MMA has a few orginization and one (UFC) that dominate . Both fan and sponsors can relate to who is the champ for each weight. Until that changes boxing , at least in the US, will be a nitch sports catering to a handfull of viewers.
