Why did Wilder turn down $7M to fight Whyte to take $2M to fight Ortiz?

It's the one thing Wilder's done in years that I can genuinely give him props for. He didn't have to fight Ortiz, and no way in hell was Whyte the harder opponent anyway, so the fact that he took on the bigger name for less money and beat him cannot be criticised in any way, shape or form.

You can spin it that Ortiz was on the slide or whatever, but he was still an undefeated and dangerous heavy with world class skills. Whyte isn't any of those things.

 

Not sure what you're seeing in Whyte really.

He barely scraped by Chisora who went on to lose to Agit Kabayel.

He laboured to a points win over a late replacement Helenius, who had already been KOed by Duhaupas.

He looked poor against Ian Lewison, who got merced by prospect Joe Joyce.

He looked bang average against Dave Allen, who got beaten up by ancient Ortiz.

He got utterly destroyed by Joshua, barring one punch that got blown out of all proportion.

His one win of note is his destruction of Lucas Browne, but that alone doesn't justify calling him one of the best heavyweights in the world. I think Parker absolutely destroys him. I thought it before the AJ fight and I think it even more now.

He's obviously not a bum, but he's this current generation's Chris Arreola, and I doubt his ceiling's any higher.

 

They saw Whyte put an extremely sloppy Lucas B. out to pasture now
his fanatics are claiming Whyte is a top 4 HW. *facepalm*

 

That theory doesn’t hold water because since then Hearn has increased that offer!
If the original offer wasn’t self funding then why would Hearn risk losing more money by upping the offer?

 

Because Ortiz is signed to Haymon and Whyte is not.

Not really. You have to factor in overseas tax as well, which is why Wilder wanted at least $7 million. $4 million after US and U.K. Tax would most likely be around what he normally earns in the US.

It's the same reason Martin wouldn't take $5 million and held Hearn up until he got $8.5 million against Joshua.

 

He ducked whyte pure and simple. He keeps saying AJ is protected he is as well. Poor decision by wilder

 

Do you really think Whyte Wilder is an SBO ppv? I know Whyte looked pretty good against Browne the otherweek but really!! Hearn is either at the wind up or he's willing to pish away his own money to promote Wilder in the UK for a Femi mega fight.

Povetkin, Ortiz, Parker, Miller and Ruiz Jr are definitely more skilled and better, would easily stop Whyte or outbox him.

I don't know why there is such a hypejob going on after the Browne fight. Browne WAS/IS shot, he moved like a shot animal, was slow and looked horrible in any aspect. I think every Top 30 hw out there would have destroyed Browne easily like Whyte did.

 

It makes me laugh when he says Joshua is protected, Wilders had 40 fights and no end of persuasion can make the case for his resume being awful from fight 1 through to fight 40. Along the way he’s managed to avoid every fighter who was inside any sanctioning bodies top 10 with the exception of Stiverne 1 to win the title and old Father Time Ortiz, heart pills an all. He also managed to avoid both Klitschko’s, Haye and Fury!

Meanwhile, Joshua won the world title in his 16th pro fight, has beaten top 10 ranked fighters in Whyte, Breazeale & Takham, Unified to World Title by beating Klitschko and then Unified again by beating Parker and he’s still only had 21 fights.

So who’s been protected here and who’s meeting challenges?
