Why did Winky Wright turn down the Jermain Taylor rematch? It was reported that he would have made 5 million dollars for the rematch. He should have taken it, because no one else was offering him that kind of money.:patsch

I think he was a bit erked about the draw and i think he wanted more money than 5 milli because of this.

I thought Winky landed the cleaner shots and shold have gotten the nod but it was a close fight and a Draw wasn't really a bad call....although winky did block alot of JT's shots witht hat impecable shell defense, JT threw a ton of power shots and they were moving winky considerably which may have swayed some judges.

his frustration got the better of his rational thinking. 5 million is a lot of money to turn down....

Winky ruined his ****ing career. I will NEVER understand why he did it to himself. I was a big fan of his too.

Wright was a master at sabotaging his own career. Back in 2003 he turned down a fight with DLH that would have been a career high payday (and opened the way to bigger purses in later fights if he beat Oscar.) But he turned that offer down and DLH fought Yori Boy instead.

As for Taylor, Winky wanted 50% for the rematch, which Taylor was reluctant to give since a) Winky was not a belt holder, and b) hadn't officially won the first match. I think that was the primary reason the rematch never happened.

Winky Wright never explained WHY he turned the fight down. However, I wouldn't be surprised if what he was offered was a fraction of what Jermaine Taylor was making.

In Winky got low balled by a lot of marquee guys and I remember him saying he was fed up with taking the smaller end of revenue. He took less money to fight Taylor, Mosley, and Trinidad....and he arguably beat all of them.

I wouldn't be surprised if Taylor offered Winky the back end while he kept the lions share of the pot.

As has been mentioned, he was stupid enough to turn down over $6m to fight Oscar, so is this really surprising?

He thought he won the Taylor fight (he refused to accept any loss until Williams), so he wanted a 50/50 split. I thought it was a perfectly-scored draw and, since Taylor was champ, it was fair he made a little more.

Probably pissed off he thought he had the fight won then two of the judges (wrongly IMO) scored the last round for Taylor!

    Winky spat his dummy out

He refused the rematch because he thought the first fight would be easier than it was, the truth is Winky is a duck artist that never wanted to take any chances in his prime unless he was fighting blown up fighters. This dude ducked by overpricing he could have fought ODH, Mayweather, Margarito, Taylor 2, but he artfully dodged them then complained nobody wanted to fight him, he's the definition of a chump

Don't have any sympathy for Wright. He made his bed. I can understand trying to play hard ball at the negotiating table but at the end of the day you do what you got to do to make the fight happen. Instead he chose to walk.

you walked out of the ring in disgust b/c you thought you won. told anyone who would listen that you won...so it logically follows that you think you can beat this guy (who happens to be the champ). the champ offers you 5 million for a rematch and you turn it down.

i deal with delusional people on a daily basis but even i cannot follow this logic.

You would expect a guy who had to go and fight on small bills in Europe to try and make a name would be loathe to turn down big offers for winnable fights. For such a respected fighter,he does seem a bit mondo bizarro
Like his fighting style,he's rather difficult to work out.:huh
