Dad and grandad boxed in their youth and took me too the gym so I wouldn't get into trouble. Boxing made a man out of me. So pretty similar story to quite a few people I think.
i won't lie to you, I wanted to be badass. Once I got into the actual competion aspect my outlook changed totally, but hey: most people start boxing because they want to beat a mother****er's ass. And then some of us just can't give up that rush.
Joined a multi-discipline gym for BJJ. I thought I was a decent "striker" as I hadn't lost too many street fights badly. Coach asked me to hit a heavy bag. It was so awkward as he coached me on what and why... This crap is so much more scientific than just punching! I fell in love. ...I haven't done BJJ since.
Tyson-Spinks. I remember we had a get together at the house, and all my family members who were there were drinking beers and having a good time. Then when the main event came on, I remember when Tyson was walking to the ring and everyone in the house got real quiet, almost as if Tyson was a mythic figure or something. I almost felt like we were at the arena b/c the TV was so loud and you could feel the anticipation. And even though I was a little boy ay time, I knew there was something powerful about what I was witnessing. I was hooked from that moment! True Story
I failed physical education back in high school and my mother signed me up. It was that or gymnastics...
My family owns a fishing boat rental. When I say family, I mean me and my mum (dad died a long time ago). I was a quiet child, always got picked on. One day three guys gave me a bit of a beat-down, and called my mum names. I was so angry that I couldn't do anything. Luckily, a guy came over who (it turns out) was a boxer. He didn't hit any of them, but weaved through the three, dodging punches all the way, and ripped the buttons of their shirts! I passed out and next I knew I was in a gym. The guy taught me to throw a right-straight and realised I had a good core (due to balancing on a boat all day every day) and could generate a lot of power. He showed me to the coach and (after a sparring match), they let me join. Never looked back. True story - op
was taken into a children's home at 12 years old ,,went boxing to not get bullied ,got better & better ,,its great doing something your good at
My and my friend were in a gang in high school. We would beat the **** out of anyone who crossed us, even 4-2. One day, we saw this guy from our rival school at the arcade. I smashed his head into the machine without warning, but he got back up and beat me down. I got expelled from school (with my rotten best friend) shortly after. I went looking for that guy who beat us, and he cracked us again. But it turned out he was a 2-0 middleweight boxer, and we went to the gym he trains at for another chance to hit him clean. Been boxing ever since.
