Why did Yuri Romanov hardly fight from 2004 to now?

Current European lightweight champion and Europes best prospect of winning a world title Yuri Romanov fought about 12 times in his first year as a pro. He picked up some very good victories but then his progress stalled. The lad definetly has the tools to be champion but that long spell of inactivity can not have helped.

I do not know of any serious injuries or health problems and other from the fact he blames Sports Network I can not see a reason for the inactivity. So can anyone explain it?

Apparently Romanov was on the verge of quitting boxing until the opportunity to fight Graham Earl came along.

He was said to be considering retiring from the sport due to the lack of fights and making enough money.

He hadn't fought since out pointing Starkov Oct' 2004 following a promotional dispute and a postponed (two times) Euro Title shot against the then Champ Stefano Zoff which he trained for twice.

Even the Earl fight wasn't without setbacks - they were originally due to fight autumn 2005 but Earl was injured (ribs?) and the fight was put back until early 2006. We all know what happened next - could have been a very different outcome if Romanov hadn't been so inactive prior to that.

    :huh

Sports Network weren't promoting the Romanov v Earl fight.

Graham Earl was with Maloney Promotions then.

Earl split with Maloney sometime after the Romanov fight and before his next bout against Ramirez. Couldn't agree terms for a new deal apparently and became a SN fighter.

He wanted to win a WBO Intercontinental title did Earl, that's why he left Maloney.

I'm suprised he didn't quit after the Earl fight then. He was robbed that night.

A brave and admirable performance from Earl but the wrong result none the less.

Definitely. Romanov beat Bobby Vanzie on a Sports Network show and after that his actiivty level dropped drastically.

The guy who said Khan would destroy Romanov in 8. I doubt it.First of all, there's no way the fight gets made. It'll take a calm fighter who hits with accuracy and power to destroy Khan. He won't be allowed near any of those fights - he's still a kid with suspect durability. And Khan has loads of money to make before he can be matched with a puncher.

Romanov is only 25 but he's pretty much cleaned out Britain (Thaxton, Vanzie, Murray, and his right hands finished off Earl as a solid UK operator) and Europe (Melero, Zoff).

Romanov has endured some real in-ring crises, he's gotten over contract problems that had him fed up with the sport, and to be where he is now, matured and looking ready for a world title shot, really takes some ability and toughness.

Khan looked like a hyperactive kid vs Kristjansen. Compared to the poise and balance of Romanov. It's good they fought on the same night because it makes clear only one man is ready to fight Nate Campbell.

Khan's still too young but he's in a hurry and his promoter isn't.
