Why didn’t Ali box at heavyweight in the Olympics?

    I assumed The early PED users were not known for their speed. I imagine Practices more commonly associated with bodybuilding and strong man events first used to assist boxers benefited them in size and strength first rather than the speed and accuracy Ali was known for.

    I don’t doubt PEDs came into boxing much earlier than we realise but until we can know the starting point of where gear benefited other events like running, gymnastics or cycling it will be hard to pinpoint for sure when it started in boxing.

    It would have been in boxing before competitive bodybuilding that’s for sure. That was nothing more than a weird fringe ‘sport’ with no support nor money behind it. Boxing was the number 1 money making show in town. The era of the Jack Johnson build being impressive was suddenly a relic of the past. Steroids are here to stay and the only game in town.
