Because a boxing fight is a business, not a fight with a schoolmate on the playground. Do you really believe that Bowe, who was at his absolute peak and had just achieved the biggest victory of his career, was afraid of Lewis and not Holyfield? that Bruno wasn't afraid of Lewis, but he was afraid of Riddick, who never seemed to be afraid of anyone? that Tucker wasn't afraid and Bowe was afraid? Lewis in 1992 was no more terrifying than Gonzales was in 1995, he looked no more dangerous than Hide.
Bowe signed a huge deal with Time Warner after the first Holyfield fight. Bowe and his team probably figured they would make big money fighting soft touches, or perceived soft touches, before taking a bigger risk in facing Lennox. Dokes and Ferguson had barely a shot in hell, and Holyfield was probably looked upon that way too. Bowe showed up 11 lbs heavier in the rematch. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1992-12-19-sp-1882-story.html
It seems that way. Looks like they were well aware of Bowe's deficiencies defensively and kept him away from bangers. It's a shame because with Bowe's action style and great offense, he would have had much more memorable fights.
Agreed. Prior to Lewis blasting out ruddock it was basically agreed that if Bowe beat Holyfield he and Lewis would meet. Newman didn’t want his prized horse to fail
Agreed. I think Bowe wanted the fight. Probably not too keen on it but would have took it. Rock Newman didn’t want it. So had Bowe do the unthinkable. Put in a bin not just the WBC belt. But his reputation and legacy as well.
