Why didn't Buchanan get a rematch with Duran ?

Surely he deserved one. The ending was very controversial and Buchanan had put up a very good fight.
I think he also won quite a few fights after this.
He registered two wins back in MSG in the 6 months following the Duran loss, that would usually indicate the 'Garden were building him up for a (deserved) shot at his old title.

i was thinking this a while ago surely if his management had pushed hard enough they would of got one champions then could usually get rematches , perhaps they did not pursue it as hard as buchanan might of wanted or thought as they new it would end in another painful defeat

I think we had this a while back or at least it was discussed in another thread.

He was definetly promised one by Teddy Brenner the MSG Matchmaker but why it never came about? I think that he was offered one but he had to fight in panama to get it + although ken was popular on the eastcoast i think that having this new young all action dynamo on the scene was more to the liking of MSG & americans alike & what with Ken in all reality being on the outside & not having the BBBc on-side left him isolated to some degree. There may well have been some degree of protectionism from Duran's management at that time seeing that he was still in all reality a bit rough at the edges but by 74 in the DeJesus II fight he was looking the compleat article & that 74 version of Duran would have obliterated Ken IMO.

My memory isn´t so much better than yours. I remember we had the discussion and that his loss to Ishimatsu finally put an end to his chance of an rematch. Don´t remember why he didn´t get one in ´73 or ´74. Of course DeJesus was the priority but other than him and perhaps Ishimatsu, the rest of the opponents weren´t anymore credible than Buchanan.

The loss to Ishimatsu actually gave Buchanan a chance to fight Duran, but he turned it down by that point.

Weren't the conditions such that he felt they were insulting? I seem to remember this from a previous thread.

Being given a long-deserved opportunity after a loss is always insulting, regardless of what was in the contract. Still think he should have taken the fight though unless he thought he just didn't have it anymore. Buchanan wasn't in much of a position to bargain at that point.

I recall an article way way back that said someting along the lines of "Ken's got too realise he ai'nt the champ no more" he either takes whats offered or move to the back of the line, Kens given different versions as to why he never got the re-match but i'am sure it was the fact that if he wanted it then it was to be in Panama & he binned it.

Good question :good He certainly deserved one,as he gave Duran a battle and a half. In a way I'm glad he did n't receive one though. Ken had already peaked, and Roberto was still improving,so it may well have been one sided.

Madison Square Garden wasn't offering up a decent amount of $ for the proverbial beating.
The fight was there to be made though.

Because he got stupid and sacked his manager and decided to represnt himself. The full, self-confessed summary of his pursuit of a rematch with Duran was to "wait for the phone to ring".

In the late 90's, Ken flew to NY to look for Duran, to try to shame him into a rematch. He still calls for the result to be overturned. Shame.

He should've won it by DQ. But Classic won't touch on that.
