I believe a no DQ rule was in effect. You could also argue that it was Buchanan who started throwing punches after the bell in the first place.

    Buchanan was terribly connected promotionally.

It was down to his brilliance he got what he got to start off with.

I also seem to recall that Buchanan was trying to set up a rematch in London, but Durans people demanded all three judges Panimanian if the fight were to take place there. Ken flatly refused.

Duran learned more about the art of boxing ( in-fighting ) esp. than most fighters. You only need to look at how he handled Dejesus' re-matches at that weight. Buchanan really didn't need any more of that panamanian bad-ass.

i remember something about it in duran's book... They wanted it in Panama, Buchanan in britain, it never came off... duran was very well protected back then, he almost only fought in panama... against questionable opponents...

    Very well protected from who??

    Questionable opponants?? Such as who!!!

Duran also fought in the States/France/PR/CostaRica. These guys back then were working fighters!! There was no juicy HBO contracts for them so they could do a Mayweather & cherrypic an opponant for $40MILLION & then take a year+ off. They squeezed in as many pay days as possible before their mandatory defence & Duran KO'd 11 out of 12. If they did'nt fight they did'nt earn, simple as:smoke

The better question is. Why was Duran awaraded the victory for a lowblow after the bell? Even if he was winning every round he should at the very least have a point taken away if not outright DQ'd.

I didn't see it that way, and all these years later still don't because both fighters kept throwing punches well after the bell, so they were both in violation,,,,the ref didn't have the recourse with them doing this as he would have within the time of the round. Still today I believe good management would have a shot at getting Kenny a no contest out of it and a retaining of his title.

when i spoke to mr buchanan in 93' he seemed cool about duran and jim watt for that matter.i expected him to have a real chip on his shoulder about those two.i was wrong.
i was always led to believe that durans manager quashed any retuurn

Buchanan initiated it by throwing a couple of punches after the bell.Duran was really taking it to Ken throughout the fight so maybe Ken got frustrated and responded accordingly.
