    This is correct about Eleta.

In the Duran biography by Christian Giudice, the author talks to Buchanan also to get his views & this was also Buchanan's view. He didn't blame Duran for the rematch not happening & said that Duran's management wouldn't let it happen.

    On Ken Buchanan,,,

After losing to Roberto Duran (WBA Lightweight Championship) in June 1972 at
    Madison Square Garden.

Ken still had a 'two-bout' lucrative fight deal with Teddy Brenner of Madison Square Garden.

First, Ken 'easily' disposed of former World Lightweight Champion, 36 year-old Carlos Ortiz (61-6-1)
    by a {TKO 6} in September 1972.

Then, he clobbered the #1 WBA Light-Welterweight contender, Korean Chang-Kil Lee
    (19-0-0) by a {TKO 2} in December 1972.

Ken, with some help from MSG, was trying to get the 'new' WBA Light-Welterweight
Champion - Antonio 'Kid Pambele' to come to New York to fight Ken Buchanan for the
140 lb. WBA Title, for sometime in early-1973.

But Antonio Cervantes and Team wanted a fight purse of $200,000 to come to New York,
plus a rematch fight clause within 6-months, and part of Ken Buchanan's fight purse to be put in
'escrow' to guarantee the rematch if 'Kid Pambele' lost.

    In another words, 'Hardball Negotiations'.

Interesting concept....Cervantes vs Buchanan.....with the winner maybe getting Duran.

Who do you think would have won in a Cervantes vs Buchanan fight?????

Cervantes probably would've won in a tough fight.

If I'm not mistaken Duran-Cervantes was discussed in the 70's but it was Eleta again who was reluctant to pit Duran against Pambele.

Beside the disagreement on the venue of the fight wasn't the problem also in the purse that was offered by Duran's team to Buchanan?

    Late 1972,,,,,,,

Somewhat a mess at Lightweight and Light-Welterweight

Ken Buchanan, was right in the 'thick-of-things, by bouncing back with
'2' impressive Knockout wins after losing to Roberto Duran in June 1972.

Roberto Duran, after winning the WBA Lightweight Title in June, scored a couple
on non-title wins, before losing to Esteban DeJesus in November 1972 in a
    non-title bout.

Esteben DeJesus, was now the Top-Rated Lightweight.

Newly crowned WBC Lightweight Champion, Rodolfo Gonzalez, had no desire to leave Los Angeles.

Former WBC Lightweight Champions, Mando Ramos and Chango Carmona were still
    viable challengers.

Newly crowned WBA Light-Welterweight Champion Antonio Cervantes, was playing hardball,
and was dictating his own guidelines.

Former WBA Light-Welterweight Champion, Alfonso 'Peppermint' Frazer (Panama) would
always be in in the hunt, with his WBA Panama-based backers.

Former WBA Light-Welterweight Champion, Nicolino Locche, still was in consideration too.

And WBC Light-Welterweight Champion, Bruno Arcari was 'unbeatable'.

Are you saying that for a brief moment Duran-Locche was in consideration, SP?

    No,

But all those fighters were in the 'mix'.

With that list of Top Fighters, who does Roberto Duran fight next,

    January 20, 1973

    'Little Jimmy' Robertson.

A 27 year-old California Lightweight, who had lost 3 of his last 4 bouts.

Now Jimmy Robertson was 'no bum', at 26-5-2 (13 KO's) he was a 'strong and awkward brawler',
but he was in 'no way' in the class of previous mentioned World Class Professionals.

In his previous bout (November 1972), 'Little Jimmy' was pretty much ''shut-out' by WBA Super-Featherweight
Champion Ben Villaflor in a 'non-title' bout.

And fighting in Panama, 'Little Jimmy' was walking into a 'minefield', which resulted in a 5th Round Knockout loss.

As for Nicolino Locche versus Roberto Duran in 1973, a very interesting match-up.
Nicolino was still a skillful boxer, but at age 33, he was past his prime.

I assume you mean that Buchanan was afraid that this would be his.fate in a rematch.

He should have gotten one. Not that I feel it would have done any good. Duran would beat him worse the second time around. Buchanan was a marvellous fighter. But Duran was on another level.

    Surf,,,,,,,,

    Not so sure about that.

Ken Buchanan got 'surprised' by Roberto Duran in that 1972 Lightweight Championship
    bout.

Just like Roberto got 'surprised' by Esteban DeJesus in November 1972.

Ken was still one of the Top 3 Lightweights out there in 1972, 1973 and 1974.

Lets not forget that all '3' of Roberto's '1973' Title Defenses were in the comfortable surroundings
    of the Gimnasio Nuevo Panama.

    * January 20..........Jimmy Robertson
    * June 2................Hector Thompson
    * September 8........Ishimatsu 'Guts' Suzuki

No it was a joke, due to Buchanan getting punched in the bollocks
