I've never understood the fight, the way Duran seemed to get away with a win when he should have been disqualified and why there was never a rematch .. I think Buchanan has become a very underrated fighter.

This topic is discussed ever so often. Duran once stated that a "rematch' was offered, but it had to have been down in Panama City. Other posters have had additional info.

At one point there were reports that Buchanan was offered $25K (a lowball offer, but I think Duran only got $35K in the first fight) to fight a rematch in Panama and turned it down.

Buchanan is on record that he took over as his own manager after losing the title (not wanting to give away a percentage) and did a bad job of it ... basically waited for his phone to ring and didn’t have the connections to be proactive and make the bigger fights for himself.

I never realized Ismael Laguna was a Panamanian, like Duran. Buch. beat Ismael twice with title at stake.
