This, 1000 times this! He didn't do it earlier because he COULDN'T do it earlier. Only reason he did it in the 12th is cause no boxer alive could have kept up Martinez's movement and workrate for a full 12.
Seriously? Because he was being dominated and he couldn't. Even after Sergio got up, Sergio felt confident enough to trade for the last minute.
It wasn't what Chavez didn't do it's what Martinez didn't let him do. Martinez's lateral movement, jab, straight left, speed and head movement didn't left Chavez get set to throw a punch. It wasn't until the last round when Martinez had tired and stood in front of Chavez at mid range with his hands down and he got caught with one big punch.
People are letting the 12 rnd cloud the true outcome of the fight. Junior was out boxed all night long. This would have been a complete shutout had Sergio just cruise in the 12 rnd. Instead he took a risk for a KO and in his carelessness ate a good shot from JR. Sergio was bleeding in the left eye and not as quick in the 12. A lucky shot from Jr and people here thinks he did something special. The reason he couldn't do anything the whole fight was because he couldn't. He's just not that good of a boxer. There are many boxers who have power and will always have a chance but will lose to a skill boxer more times then not. Jr is that type of boxer. He is more power then skill. David Tua is another example.
He couldn't do it any earlier because every time he tried to come forward he got smashed in the face.
He was catching Sergio every now and then the whole fight. It's just in the 12th, Sergio was gassed and already taken enough shots (also head clashes), that he was vulnerable. Fighting with your hands down is an awful idea when you're gassed
Yup. Take away the knockdown and the knockout win at the end and Taylor would've still been horribly damaged. Senior administered a vicious beating to Taylor's body and head before winning. Junior didn't do too much for 11 rounds and only really came on real big when Sergio slowed.
