Cotto has shown signs of running out of gas in a couple of his recent fights. Namely against Mosley. In that fight he pretended he was boxing Mosley in the late rounds but in truth, he was out of gas. Against Margarito, his only chance was to attempt to take him out early because Cotto had to know the pressure Margarito would put on him would cause him to tire late in the fight. Instead, Cotto tried to be cute and just lay back and try to nail Margarito. That didn"t work and around about the 7th round, Cotto ran out of gas. Look, I respect Cotto but Margarito was just too strong for him. Trust me, I am not saying these things as a result of last nights fight. Two weeks ago I said Cotto cant hurt Margarito and Margarito can hurt Cotto and that Cotto runs out of gas.

He tried to apply pressure. When you're unloading big punches on a fighter and they hav next to no effect, it affects you mentally knowing what normally hurts guys badly is not doing anything.

He fought the way he fought because he was forced to by Margarito's power and pressure.

Have you ever tried to grab someone when they tuck their elbows? You do know they can just shove you off, right?

The proper way to clinch is to get under your opponents arms, rendering them useless. It's hard to get under Tony's arms because he tucks his elbows well. All that would have happened would be Tony shoving Cotto off and throwing a short uppercut in the middle.

If Cotto banked on throwing his 1-2s and grabbing it was very likely that Margarito would brutalize him underneath. At least when Cotto backed off to the ropes the uppercut was not as big a factor. Not until Cotto paid the price for the left hooks to the body anyways.

The bodywork started it all. And I don't see where grabbing would have helped.

because, the fight would have been over by the 5th rd. Margo is a style nightmare for anyone at this weight, too much stamina, too much of a high work rate, extremely resistant. No one has ever stood in front Cotto and taken those kinds of bombs the Margo did. Margo wasn't even hurt at any point in the fight, at least from what I saw.

Im not saying he should have been Ruiz, but he couldnt keep up the pace and instead of clinching he traded even though he was tired. That just isnt smart. The clinch would have served as a purpose to break Marg's rythm and get him off the ropes.
Do you think he would have gotten hit with more uppercuts had he held? No it would have been the samething, infact he probably got hit with more by just sitting(literally)on the ropes. Cotto sat their tired crouched(where he couldnt see the uppercut or the looping shots) in his stance and let marg beat on him. The clinch would have bought him time, Imo the clinching should have started in the early rds to slow the pace so he could have something left for the championship rds. It seems to me like cotto cant think under pressure and only knows one way to deal with it and thats stand and fight. Cotto's corner also gave **** all advice

Because when he pressured margo he was open to getting hit and as told by his body language he could not really take margo's punches but so long.
