had thay been there at the same time, i am sure that the fight would have happened. neither of them were known for taking the easy route. they both looked to fight the best.
There is a famous boxing photo of Duran looking at a picture of Arquello and Duran's fist is clinched.
Yeah I seen that one, but I still think that if Pryor was beating Arguello like that. Imagine a greater overall fighter imo (Pyror is the **** to) against arguello. But I wish they did fight :good
Arguello/Duran never happened because Alexis ****ed up big time by losing to Vilomar Fernandez in his first fight at 135. Arguello eventually avenged the loss, but it screwed up a mega fight with Duran.
Alexis Arguello prided himself on fighting and beating the best fighters in their respective weight divisions. There is no doubt in mind that the only reason Alexis didn't become a 3 divisional champ is because he opted to fight Pryor as opposed to the weaker beltholders.
He did become a 3 divisional champ though. Arguello, like Pryor, was a magnificent fighter, but Duran would have won that fight. It would have been EPIC though! One of the greatest fights, maybe the greatest IMO, that never happened.
I meant to say 4. In any event, how would you feel Duran would of got the win. He was a great pressure fighter at 135, with subtle defensive skills, but Alexis never had trouble with pressure fighters. It wasn't Pryors pressure that lost him the fight, it was Pryor's ability to take the left hook and the right hand flush. Does Duran take those shots just as well as Pryor at 135, and what do you feel are the keys to victory? Is there anyway that Alexis can win?
I think it's worth mentioning that Arguello was better at 135 and in the late 70s than in 1982 @ 140 lbs. But ultimately I think it's the same result as the Pryor fight. Arguello either gets stopped late or loses a decision.
Duran was too good all-around. In regards to Duran taking Alexis's shots, Arguello was an accurate puncher and would get some good shots in, but unlike Pryor, Duran didn't leave himself as open as often. He had very good head movement and upper body movement. Also, Duran's chin was sturdy as well. It took a monster 154 lb. puncher to stop him after 80 something fights.
I agree on all accounts. Alexis is the harder hitting 135lb fighter, and he had advantages in height and reach, I believe, but these didn't seem to give him to much of an advantage over Pryor. Duran was a better fighter than Pryor, and 135lb was his natural weight. You would be stretched to give Alexis Arguello a case, which is a shame, considering how great of a fighter Arguello was. Just a testament to how good a 135 Duran was.
duran would have broke arguello down ...his defense was tight too at 135 so any images of pryor looking up at the lights happening to duran should be tossed out the window ...no way does duran eat those same shots with his defense
