A top, dangerous American fighter? Benn did. And had great success. Why was Eubank so content with fighting Euro-Level fighters or Brits who were on the world stage, but never an actual top American?
As he has said many times, why take the risk of getting hurt when you can make good money taking easier fights? When the time came that he was no longer the A side he took riskier fights, albeit against British opposition.
I don't think Roy Jones was keen to fight Eubank at all, I'm talking after the Collins losses when Eubank was hungry again. He was going to fight Nunn to be fair if he beat Benn again in their rematch (1/2 favourite!), he was under contract to. And guess what? He would've beaten him! Nunn boxed terrible against Steve Little. Did Eubank miss a boat there!?
Not the Nunn who faced Little and Liles mate, or Sosa in Mexico. A shadow of the '88 version or the one who was dominating Toney.
Hold on American fighters? Like jones? Jones wanted no part of Eubank, Benn or Michaczewski for that matter! He feared "euro" fighters! Eubank travelled to Germany to beat an unbeaten 6,4" southpaw German who went on to have some very good wins against lesser american fighters like Michael Nunn. Jones would never have done the same. He didn't have the same heart, or chin!
Benn had already blown away the most dangerous yank in IB, making him the man to tackle.. Also Tim Littles the mandatory challenger pulled out of his fight with Eubank through injury to be replaced by Thornton.. Littles was considered as good as Roy Jones or Gerald McLellan at the time.. Just some food for thought..
I think there was so much going on in Europe. Its like why didnt Jones or Toney or Nunn face one of the top Europeans at SMW where it was a tougher scene? I think the reason would be the same, as there was plenty going on stateside also, even if not as tough or competitive. Eubank in Europe had Benn, Rocchigiani, Wharton, later Collins, Watson, later Calzaghe
