That's the biggest myth in boxing when it comes to Floyd. Floyd picked his opponents very carefully and even corrales fight was sketchy and forced Corrales to lose a ton of weight fast or wouldn't fight him, and then wouldn't grant a rematch when corrales had the proper time to lose the weight. (30lbs in 2 weeks! Floyd has him drop or not fight) Here's the real deal on back then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=forstYqvDUI
How could Floyd do all this when he was under Top Rank? Bob Arum runs that company, if you didn't notice. You do realize Floyd was signed to Top Rank until after his Judah fight right? The majority of his career was with Bob Arum. So please explain how Floyd had all this leverage, so early in his career when he was barely getting on HBO, to pull what you say he did, when he was being promoted by Top Rank? If you want to get into the "Floyd power plays" after he left Top Rank, fair game. But before that, he was promoted by Bob Arum. That's just reality.
Freitas and Casamayor would have been very nice fights and, if he won, great victories at 130 for Floyd. However, he fought both of the men who had achieved #1 ranking at 130 during his stay there. Timing, checks, and risk/reward just weren't right to make both parties do it. The same can be said of many legendary fighters. Which top prime fighters did Hagler ever fight? Depending on your answer, Floyd could in fact have a long list by your standards.
Frietas only looked good against small fighters that stood in front of him. I still remember the casamayor fight ,he was supposed to be this huge puncher and basically ran the second half of the fight from a boxer and got a BS decision based on point deductions. My favorite fight from Popo is the Corrales fight. Im gonna watch that chump get slaughtered right now as a matter of fact
Floyd had bigger fish to fry. He would have knocked Frietas out at 135. Popo didnt have Castillo's grit and heart
So people are criticizing Floyd's resume, yet he should have fought Freitas who has a weaker resume? I don't get it. Who did Freitas fight again?
Popo answered this very question in 2003 just before his bout with Jorge Barrios. BoxingInsider.com: What are your plans if you successfully defend your titles against Barrios on Aug. 9? Would you like to unify the four titles, or maybe step up in weight and fight WBC lightweight champion Floyd Mayweather, at 135 pounds? Acelino Freitas: We’re getting ready for Jorge Barrios now and concentrating on him. If the coincidence happens to fight Mayweather, or whoever comes, that’s going to be up to the promoters and whoever is responsible for putting the fight together. I like to concentrate on each and every individual and then, after that, if it’s a coincidence that it’s going to happen, it will happen. BoxingInsider.com: Do you feel that Floyd Mayweather has been ducking you? He jumped up to the lightweight division shortly after you took the WBA jr. lightweight title from Joel Casamayor. Acelino Freitas: I don’t think so. Every individual works the way they want to work and it was his time to move up to 135 – that’s the way he had planned it. It was good for him because he became a world champion in that division.
