Why didn't GGG think of fighting Kovalev, or something similar?

That's what is most impressive, here we have Ward, a semi active SMW fighter, moving up, facing sub par opposition at 175, finally fights a true top LHW, actually the reining undefeated LHW champion, gets off to a rocky start by getting caught a couple times, only to come back, land the better punches and make it a close fight that could have arguably gone either way.

In the rematch he settled the score by destroying Kovalev physically and mentally. Ward is a true great fighter.

We're discussing Ward's status leading up to the Kovalev fght, not his status when he retired after kicking Kovalev's ass.

When Ward fought Kovalev in 2016 he had 5 fights in four years.

    2012- 1 fight
    2013- 1 fight
    2014- 0 fights
    2015- 2 fights
    2016- 1 fight

As I said, being a SMW, being very inactive, and moving up to LHW he proceeded to kick Kovalev's ass, mentally and physically.

He fought Barrerra and Brand in 2016 prior to his gift against Kovalev.

He only faced the worlds most dangerous man Paul Smith in 2015.

Walks into Big Bear to resume training around 166 ton 168 is one of the most natural |Middleweights we have seen for some time....Jumping to Light Heavy would be a bridge to far for a fighter like Him.!!!

But he was active coming into the Kovalev fight AND 175 as a whole, your point is mute.
