Why didn't Goldstein stop the fight?

After Patterson got up the 1st time, he was so out of it that he didn't know where he was. He went back his corner obviously not knowing the round was still in session leaving himself wide open and was knocked down again.

Then he was knocked down 5 more times. Refs today stop fights for much less. Why did he let that fight continue? In fact, why were refs so non chalant in general about stopping fights?

Robinson/Lamotta was another one. The fight was stopped on orders from the chairman of the Illinois Athletic Commission, despite Lamotta being beaten senseless since round 10. Vikki Lamotta couldnt even watch anymore.

    Why was that?

In the case of Patterson, he was probably working on the basis that the champion has to be given every chance to recover and fight back if he can get up before the count of 10.
The fact that the challenger was a foreigner and an underdog probably prejudiced that thinking further.
    It's pretty shocking though.

    Robinson-LaMotta was okay.
The champ was given a good chance.
