Why didn't Hagler give Hearns the rematch, even after lossing to SRL he couldve had rematch w/Hearns

After the Hagler vs Hearns 1985 fight, they had double header tune-ups (Hearns-Shuler, Hagler-Mugabi in 1986) before their proposed rematch.
But since Sugar Ray Leonard challenged Hagler, then the Hagler-Hearns rematch was off.
Yet, after Hagler lost to SRL (1987), why didn't Hagler rematch Hearns and then retire.

If you claim that Hagler was past his prime as an excuse, then Hearns was past his prime too, yet Hearns went on to fight SRL in 1989, while both were past their primes too, and even then Hearns still went on fighting into the 1990's.

Was Hagler afraid to fight Hearns again?
After all, Hearns hurt and almost stopped Hagler in the 1st round with that uppercut that busted and cut Hagler's nose causing Hagler to bleed during the fight.

Under what reason would hagler have been afraid to fight Hearns again? Hagler took the best Thomas had to offer. A rematch would probably result in the same thing, a loss for Hitman.

Hagler got badly hurt in the 1st round from Hearn's uppercut.
Hearns had a shot at KOing Hagler in that 1st round if Hearns had capitalize on Hagler properly when Hagler was hurt.

Hagler was pretty shot by the time he fought SRL. I think retirement had been in the back of his mind for a long time. But in no way or form was he ever scared of Hearns. C'm on, be serious.

Hagler feared no one. Desire was ebbing away before SRL. Lets leave it with what we've got, a crushing demolition job on Hearns

Stunned, or had his attention caught cold noticeably, never was he close to going down or being stopped. Hearns landed similar shots after and Hagler walked through them. After that first round it was impossible for Tommy to dent Hagler, beast mode had kicked in.

I'll agree with Boxing Truth that Hagler was stunned, maybe wobbled. Hearns was an atomic puncher and he landed flush. But at what cost? His hand blew up like a grenade on Hagler's rocky face. Hearns fought the wrong fight; he was too brave for his own good and tried to slug with Hagler. Terrible idea. He should have run lke a scalded cat and boxed at range.

They both probably knew they couldn't replicate the first fight, they had set the bar so high.

    That's what Im thinking too.

They brutalized each other when they fought, that they were psychologically scarred from the fight, that would make them a little "gun shy" in their proposed rematch.

Hagler was cautious when he fought Mugabi.

Yeah, it would be interesting to know if Hearns wanted the rematch. I suspect he didn't. Hagler was just too rugged for Hearns, despite Hearns' power, Hagler walked through it. I think a rematch would have seen the same result.

He would've lasted longer maybe, but Tommy just wasn't tough enough to go the distance with Hagler. He was getting walked down regardless of his right hand imo

Maybe. I think Hagler had slowed down more than Hearns by then though. If Hearns fought smart and boxed from range, he may have been able to win on points, over that version of Hagler.

Hearns did demand the rematch, but Hagler when on to fight SRL instead, but Hearns still wanted the rematch and Hagler said no, retirement was his choice.

I think Hearns would've fought differently in the rematch, probably box Hagler and not turn it into a slugfest.

I think he had slowed down some Hagler, and it showed even more so against Mugabi's fast hard counter punching style, he was countered hard and solid at times. The writing was on the wall imo with how long Hagler had left in boxing, it was a very hard fight for MH

I remember watching that fight in a bar while in LA. People were going nuts, while it lasted. I don't know, poor Tommy, if he didn't take guys out he faded. Now granted it was all about the heat with SRL. I think Hearns would have beaten SRL if they had fought that fight indoors. SRL had Dundee cleverly behind him, pulling the strings behind the scene. Hagler, though, I just don't see Tommy beating the Marvelous One.
