This is a serious question here, and some may consider it a troll but i'd like to know from reasonable minded, fair fans why the likes of Bernard Hopkins never fought outside the US more than he did? I know he fought in Ecuador and scraped a win but has he fought anywhere else? And I don't mean different states inside the US either. What are the reasons for this?
He had ashitty style. No one wanted to see him outside the U.S.Not a lot in the U.S. either for that matter.Would you pay to see him fight?
He just fought in Ecuador cuz he had to fight Mercado there. If he wasn't obligated be sure he wouldn't have done that
Winky Wright chose to fight outside the US because he wasn't getting enough love from promoters here. Hopkins wasnt getting much love either but more so than Winky. Hopkins decided to stick it out and knew his day would come and it did when he beat Tito. For the most part, good boxers in the states will only fight abroad when they are not getting repspect here or they just plane ole suck. Just my opintion btw....
Hopkins didnt fight many fighters who were out of USA, the non US fighters he fought were like Howard Eastman, and Calzaghe, Calzaghe at the time was the one hu needed to build his legacy more than B-Hop so he came to the US. Now B-Hop wants to go to Wales.
Its a shame though, i'll be honest im not a Hopkins fan but there could have been many more great fights down the years if he'd considered fighting the likes of Eubank, Benn, Watson, in the UK. Would have been huge fights too, could be argued that they couldve gone over there too but fighters these days are too protected and that includes UK, European and US fighters.
Simple....Most of the serious and ELITE level comp make the trek to the US....so most of the talent pool and depth comes from or to the US. Before all these UK posters start bashing me...i'm not saying the best boxers are US boxers...All Im saying is the best fighters come to the US to push their careers to the next level. THe harder competition is in the US and the boxers come from all around the world. Bhop had no need to fight abroad....the competition that mattered most could be found in the United states.
No they wouldn't have been. Hopkins didn't even start making a name for himself until around that Tito fight. He still had trouble landing big fights until after the De La Hoya fight. Furthermore, Hopkins was a MW and these guys were all SMWs. Hopkins had a tough time getting the top guys in his own divsion to fight him. It would've been very hard to convince British SMWs to fight an unknown American with a difficult style.
He couldn't draw in the States, and wouln't draw elsewhere etither. He could have had a good fight with Strum that would have drawn rigtht after he beat DLH, and Hopkins then avoided Strum like lighting. then Strum lost a fight. Arthur was then a bit too young, and Warren didn't have any body, that could draw a yawn in Middleweight. Warren, Universum, and Saurland were then the only big promoters with stables, that had any debth in the World, out side the states.
The fight plan wouldn't change. He would still look to make Calzaghe to chase after him and he would still rely on that straight right. Obviously, he would up his workrate and cutdown on Calzaghe's workrate through out the entire fight. This would certainly be a difficult task, but not impossible.
I am just bringing up the fact that Calzaghe is constantly berated for not fighting the 2 dominant Light Heavys at the time. Surely you see the similaities here?
