Well, I've never criticised Calzaghe for not fighting Jones or Toney. I can't answer for the critical beliefs held by other posters.
You could argue that with the size of the USA fighting in another state is like fighting in another country but you don't get the same mad, patriotic fervent support as you would in a nation vs nation contest. Adapting to different fans, media, culture and climate is much harder if you are in another mans country! Its a physchological as well as a physical confrontation to overcome.
There's also the fact that fighters make more money in the states so why go elsewhere? Why did Lennox shift his camp across the Atlantic? He could make a lot more money and develop his legacy by knocking out all-comers on their home territory. In my opinion a fighter shows more character when he goes into his opponents back yard.
good point and I agree with your "character" statement....its just some fighters have a perception that they are fighting the judges as well as their opponent in a hometown fight.
:-( see....you are gonna open up a bag of worms with these kinds of posts....bottom line the stiffer comp and more money is to be made in the US....but if the UK had the $$$ and the better comp most fighters would be fighting across the pond.....you go where the money and the competition is.
Yeah I agree to an extent an I think it is a problem that is endemic in boxing although I would say that Calzaghe, who you pointed out has fought on foreign soil more than BHOP. Don't want to start a tit for tat debate on that I just think its disappointing that home fans dont get the opportunity to see more foreign fighters more often as there are plenty of great fighters out there, personally id love to see RJJ or Pavlik fight over here.
