Something else i've often wondered about as well. we all know what Jake had to do to get his shot. How come Graziano, another neighbourhood kid got his shot? Were there any strings attached, like losing it back to Zale for example?
I have no idea....didn't even know Zale was in either....Graziano did have a good winning streak when he got the shot.
They were signed and scheduled to fight for LaMotta's title in the summer of 1950, but Graziano busted his hand in training a couple of weeks before the bout took place, which forced him to withdrawl. Mitri was substituted in his place.
Is this for real? Not that I don't believe you but got any sources?Anyway why didn't they fight after, before or after Dauthuille?
this was a for real match up and as a matter of fact ive seen a photo on the net(cant find it anymore) of lamotta and graziano at the signing both winking and (i cant remember for sure)both shaking hands. if someone has thisd photo please post it. ive asked for it before. this was way before dauthille. tiberio the european middleweight champ took the fight after the rock(some say that he did it purposedly so he wouldnt have to fight jake)busted his hand
Yeah, it was for real, and them signing the contracts for the fight was reported in a vast number of sources dated May 24th, 1950, and obviously including the NY Times on that date; "Middleweight Champion Jake La Motta and the former titleholder, Rocky Graziano, yesterday signed official contracts for a fifteen round title battle June 28 at the Polo Grounds." On June 17th of that year all the papers reported that the bout was cancelled due to Graziano breaking his left hand.
I could've swore I remember someone saying he punches a tree I think it was his hardest and broke his hand to get out of the fight. Graziano didn't want no part of LaMotta as far as I know since LaMotta would fight guys Rocky wouldn't
Now that is some weird stuff, how much of a beating could he tak from LaMotta that Zale and others didn't already put on him?
