Graziano was shot after Zale, you don't get over a beating like that, this is why they never met in hte ring.
They were buddies from the Hood..... They knew they'd ruin each other..... Personally, I'd favor LaMotta based on the fact that he was the stronger of the two fighters.... In truth, Graziano was really a solid 154 pounder, but Jr. Middleweight didn't exist in them days.... And, even though Jake LaMotta was only 5' 8" tall in his prime, 160 got to be a serious strain for him as he closed in on age 30.... Jake LaMotta would've been perfect at about 164 to 166 pounds later on... The rise to 175 was just a hair or two too much for LaMotta..... Rocky Graziano had to stuff himself to get up to 158 to 159 pounds; not a true Middleweight.... YES! In 1949, in a catch-weight fight of 160 to 162 pounds or so, I'd take Jake LaMotta all the way to the bank..... Earlier around 1947, Jake LaMotta made 155 for Tony Janiro, but that was a "One-Fight" deal..... Never again..... MR.BILL:hey
whats weird about this fight never taking place(especially when they claim rocky broke his hand on purpose and also quoted as saying "ill never fight my friend jake") is that when rocky was asked if he thought he could beat lamotta he said "i always did in reform school". and another good point made why didnt they fight after the mitri or dauthille fight instead of srr? SOMEONE PLEASE POST THE PHOTO OF THE GRAZIANO-LAMOTTA FIGHT SIGNING.
So we've got that they didn't fight because because they were good buddies and that Rocky broke his hand on purpose to avoid going through with it. Why then was it ever made?
in lamottas book he claims that he thought it would be a great money maker and bigger crowd draw and for himself to finish all the horse **** kidfighting they did together as young men. lamotta would have made graziano wish his mother never had him. lol
I can think it was the reason called money then right? But I really doubt Graziano broke his hand on purpose to get out of the LaMotta fight
Altough there were hard times I wouldn't completely leave it out but it's Rocky Graziano we are talking about,he was a bad dude.
1. Graziano wanted no part of Lamotta in the 1940s. Refused to fight him because he knew what the outcome would be. They were friends and rocky knew jake was MUCH better. Once Lamotta held the title, then graziano had no choice but to fight him. But before either had the title in the mid 1940s, graziano stayed as far away possible from jake. 2. Lamotta would have killed Graziano. It would have been a one sided murder. There is no chance graziano could win this fight. Even if Graziano gets lucky enough to land his sunday punch, I doubt it would hurt jake. Jake was bigger, much stronger, much more durable, much better jab, much more stamina, much more skilled swarmer, much better defense, much better workrate.
Graziano's nick name for his buddy Jake was "policeman" ,because Jake fought the guys Rocky would rather give a miss to ,Ernie Schaaf was called Sharkey's "policeman" for the same reason.
I read in a Ring mag or Boxing Illustrated, can't remember which, but they were doing a story on trainer Al Silvani. On the proposed fight, Rocky asked Al to train him.Silvani said "sorry Rock,Jake already asked me".Silvani claimed Rocky said,"ya don't train me,ya don't train Jake".Silvani said, the next ay he read,Rocky breaks hand.Going on memory,so I can't tell ya what issue that was.
That is what people associated with Graziano say. Many people in Boxing have said that Graziano was scared to death of LaMotta.
