1987,1988 mike tyson would have walked through any version of holmes and would have stalked and destroyed him at some point or chased him in circles. Larry felt how stron this man was witht he first punch tyson threw and it hit larrys arm and shot it up like a bat hitting a ball. holmes couldnt keep him off.
Holmes didn't look so bad until he gassed out. Actually in round 4 he looked quite good, like if he turned around the fight. Then he got sparked.
Larry was old, shot and was still competitive . . . Prime Larry would whooped Tyson's ass. Think of Douglas only 10 times worse.
Mike Tyson beats any version of Larry Holmes, don't pay any attention to these ''Classic Enthusiasts" who swear on their lives that a prime Holmes beats a prime Mike......post Tyson fight,Larry was still a top level fighter who never been kayoed after that and was competitive with other top fighters he fought post Tyson.
Holmes was old and rusty. His jab looked shitty in 1985 against Carl Williams and Michael Spinks. If he was top of his game maybe he would have jabbed Tyson's head off. But that wouldn't be an easy task. Tyson slipped jabs well.
nice post Many people wrongfully think the most heavy jabs are the best ones when the jab isn't even meant to be a power punch.
Old, rusty, and far from supreme shape which he had to be if he had a realistic chance to beat Tyson at that point. At one point Holmes did jab and circle danced around the ring, but old Holmes could'nt sustain that type of movement against a young Tyson. When I look back now, Holmes gameplan was bad from the start. Holmes after the Tyson fight had great sucess just laying on the ropes and picking apart Ray Mercer. He even did that to a much lesser degree of sucess against Holyfield. The experts thinking back then was that a fighter could'nt lay on the ropes and survive an undefeated Mike Tyson. Hindsight say's that way of thinking may have been flawed. Knowing how easily flustered and how mentally weak Mike Tyson really was, Holmes laying on the ropes and playing defense like he did vs Mercer may have worked against Tyson, it certainly would have been a better gameplan than trying to outbox him conventionally.
