I was so excited to of heard about this fight at first. But now i see both fighters are gonna fight different fighters. This fight had fire works all over it wouid of been an awesome fight.
It was never finalized. Lemieux was on the short list that Cotto was looking at for his farewell PPV, and everybody presumed it would be Lemieux because of the lack of scheduling availability or star power of anybody else on the list. Then outta the blue comes Sadam Ali, whom I don't think anybody had on their radar as Cotto's potential last opponent, so Lemieux is left to fend for himself and find another opponent.
^ so I guess technically you could say Cotto "ducked" Lemieux by not choosing him from the list of guys he was looking at for his last match, but that isn't really what the word ducking is supposed to mean. It wasn't like there was a reasonable expectation or impetus for Cotto to fight Lemieux. His name just happened to make the shortlist because there weren't many other big name dance partners available that could sell a PPV out there.
It was never guranteed lemieux can land that ko punch cottos ring iq and experience could of given lemieux a tough fight.
Cotto isn't really a middleweight and I doubt he really wanted to fight a big 160lber who is capable of knocking him spark out. Lemieux got offered a title shot against Saunders. Better options out there for both fighters. No duck, just the way it panned out.
