Why didn't Lennox Lewis try to get the Canadian Heavyweight title

He had bigger fish to fry.

 

No real reason to I guess.

 

Canadian championship Wasn’t worth ****.

The British champion was historically the second most valuable title in the world. UK having a bigger altogether boxing industry than Canada. A non title heavyweight fight in the UK typically making more money than the equivalent Canadian one. Bruno v Bugner wasn’t for a title yet it was in a football stadium.

The Lonsdale belt, which is made of real gold and silver is actually a more valuable trophy than even the “world” governing bodies hand out.

Fans outside the UK look upon British Champions as mere contenders to more important titles..but as champions of their own country they can earn as well as any minor “World” champion.

 

One of the reasons Lewis turned pro in England was because the boxing was far better than in Canada.

 

Canada had a decent amateur system but being so geographically close to America meant that Canadian pro fighters were more likely to get scouted and financial backing from America. The Canadian professional ranks at the time was a much more limited market than the pro ranks of British boxing was even if the Amateurs were strong.

Money. The answer is money.

 

I remember an interview with him, and this was after he came back over here, where he said winning the Canadian title was among his plans. It seemed a bit pointless by that stage.

 

Lennox is as British as Fish and Chips didn't you know?

 

Who on Earth would ever give a **** about the Canadian heavyweight title? Ken Lakusta was probably not in the top 100 heavyweights at the time he held the title.

 

That’s really about it. I’m not disrespecting the Canadian title but it’s not like a prime George Chuvalo was around when Lewis was coming up. The guys holding that belt were men like Conroy Nelson and Ken lakusta who barely even qualified as journeyman

 

The last Canadian Heavyweight champion that really mattered was Trevor Berbick in the 80's he would often fight overmatched opponents retaining the title with ease.

 

Razor Ruddock did win it. But even he, like Berbick and Lewis, was born and raised somewhere else. I think if you take away the Canadian champions that were either born somewhere else or whose parents were born somewhere else there wouldn’t be a Canadian championship to fight for. Canada is a very new country in this respect. You can see why sponsorship is often sought elsewhere.
