Sonny and George's careers overlapped considerably and they had some common opponents. Sonny twice fought a young Big Cat ,Chuvalo an ancient one. Floyd fought both men. King,DeJohn,Folley ,and of course Ali, all tangled with both men, yet they never fought each other ,was it just because it was a bad stylistic matchup for Chuvalo?:think
had liston won the second ali fight, they were scheduled to fight each other. george thought liston took a dive, which blew his chance at the title
Yeah he'd have busted him up, but it would've been a fun fight to watch. It is odd that the fight never happened, you'd think that at some point from the late 1950s until Sonny's death they would've duked it out at least once.
The supremely conditioned '68 Liston who beat Clark would brutalise Chuvalo using his ramrod jab & uppercuts.
They were scheduled to fight many times, but it just didn't come off. We were a bit unlucky not to see this. The final time they were supposed to fight was in 1971, but Liston passed away.
chuvalo wanted to fight liston, from what i hear they were signed to meet when sonny was found dead in las vegas
Chavalo wasn’t Chuck Wepner. While Liston would be a favorite, I think team Liston realized this type of fight has some risk. Chavalo was a tough son of a gun, and could bring Liston’s questionable intangibles ( Quitting, or DQ via fouling ) into play.
