Think he was clearly more than happy to enjoy the money he made n enjoy the celeb life guy used to be everywhere when I was young Personally if he took a rematch seriously it would be a closer fight people go on like he still didn't have his moments and won a few rounds
Barrera did worse than take his soul, he stripped him bare and took his identity so much so that Naz mentally never recovered.
Yeah I think people often remember the Barrera fight too much, because that was lasting memory of Hamed. And actually forget he won 15 world title fights, with 13 of them being stoppages, and was also the Lineal champion for almost 3 years. Also look at how many ranked top 10 fighters he beat in champion fights. Steve Robinson Ranked 3 Manuel Medina Ranked 3 Tom Johnson Ranked 1 Kevin Kelley Ranked 5 Wilfredo Vazquez Ranked 5 Cesar Soto Ranked 9 Vuyani Bungu Ranked 4 Then you have fighters like Paul Ingle who went on to become Featherweight champion after losing to Hamed. Overall Hamed had a very good career, unfortunately he never quite had the win over an ATG. But still in his prime a fantastic talent with dynamite in both hands, who would be dangerous for alot of Featherweights past/present.
He's a guy who pretty much avoided the top 5 best fighters in the world 126 pounds and down. He never fought Pacquiao, John, Morales or Marquez. Then he finally stepped into the big leagues against Barrera and was made to look elementary and without any boxing skill or technique.
Because he'd made his money and no longer had the desire necessary to get himself into the kind of shape where he could beat Barrera, if that was even possible, which by that point it probably wasn't. Hamad has an underrated resume, though. I rank him #19 all time at FW, based only on fights contested in and around that weight division. He beat more ranked contenders at FW than just about anyone I rank below him and more than many I rank above him.
I disagree. When you market yourself as an ATG and the best little man in boxing it's a travesty to avoid any man in the top 5. And that's what he did. He never fought Pacquiao, John, Marquez, Morales. Then he finally steps into the top 5 and looks like a bar room brawler. The gig was up.
Were any of those fights seriously mooted? I maybe wrong but i cant remember any talk of them happening
Nobody is saying that Hamed wasn't a good/decent fighter. It's that he was marketed as this unstoppable Featherweight. Well he's not. He wasn't even top 5 of his own era.
