Why didn't Toney, RJJ or Hopkins fought: Eubank, Collins & Benn?

Being a boxing fan for 6 years now, I'm wondering when i look back at the Middleweight or the Super Middleweight division and I'm curious why the americans didn't fight the brits? I mean those match ups had the potential to be some real classics, specially when its UK vs USA. :deal

Well I believe that they was afraid of losing. And when they finally did, Joe Calzaghe whooped them. And Hopkins got r@ped.

The UK fighters like Benn and Eubank were called out by Tony but don't know why they never fought.

Eubank is on record saying that he was never mandated to fight Jones.

Joe never wanted to travel until late in his career plus he also came along after a Benn and Eubanks were long past their best ..

There could have been some great match ups. But it was just a mix of politics and circumstances as to why they didn't fight.

Steve Collins was at MW in the early 90's, and he was a very good fighter. But he lost all of his big fights against McCallum, Johnson and Kalambay. And around that time, Toney had beaten Johnson, Nunn, and McCallum etc. Roy didn't really do anything until he split from his father and fought Hopkins in 93. Then they all moved up to SMW, where Roy met Toney in a huge fight, while Collins was steered into fighting for the lightly regarded WBO belt. Meanwhile, Hopkins remained at MW and fought for the vacant title that Roy had relinquished. Then Toney left SMW for LHW in 95, and Roy did the same in 96 when he couldn't get fights with Benn or Liles.

Chris Eubank beat Benn for the WBO MW title in the early 90's, again when Roy and Hopkins weren't known. He then moved up to SMW where he was content to just fight his WBO mandatories. So fights with Roy and Toney etc were never really viable, and he had great domestic rivals.

Nigel Benn beat DeWitt and Barkley at MW in the early 90's, again when Hopkins and Roy hadn't done anything. Then he moved up to SMW while Roy and Hopkins were emerging at MW. Toney was also still at MW during Benn's early reign at SMW. There was a small window of opportunity to fight Roy in 95, but according to Roy and his advisors, Don King wanted future options. Again, after Roy had beaten Toney, Toney moved up to LHW. So he was out of the picture. Then after his tragic fight with McClellan, Benn retired the following year in 1996, after three losses to Malinga and Collins.

So they all sadly missed each other.

Benn v Toney would have been a great fight.

RJJ v Eubank would have been good as well.

    It's simple really..

They hid in the SMW division.

The SMW division has always been a joke where second tier LHW's drained down to form their own weight class and pick on MW's.

There's a very nice program about that. At one point Eubank says he didn't dare to face RJJ and Collins said RJJ ducked him. Everyone praises Toney while RJJ says he spanked him hard etc. Calzaghe keeps his cool for the most part.
