:yikes After a stoppage that saw a lusting Louis with murder in his eyes standing over the vaporized remains of Tony Galento, why, oh why?

There's some rematches that just don't need to happen and this was one of them.

Alright, he caught Louis a few times and knocked him down but once Louis turned up the heat he got utterly destroyed.

Did Galento every campaign for a rematch?

He was pretty much at the end of his career anyway

This is almost the equivalent of asking why Bert Cooper didn't get a rematch against Holyfield or why Wepner didn't get another crack at Ali. Contenders are paid to do their very best against the champ and hopfully make the fight challenging to some degree. It doesn't mean that every time one of them shows a heart beat in a title fight, that he gets an automatic second chance.

Rematches for the title are warranted when either:

    A. A bout goes the distance and results in an indecisive verdict.

    B. An all out war occurs, that lasts a bit longer than just a few rounds, and perhaps one flash knockdown

    C. A controversial stoppage occurs when one man was ahead of the other, or Disqualification that might night have been warranted.

    D. A challenger goes back to the ranks and works his way back up to the title after beating the best around..

It's actually a good question. Nova was coming off his first stoppage of Max Baer when Galento, nearly ten pounds lighter than he had previously been for Louis, collided with Lou and brutally mugged him into submission over 14 filthy rounds for his biggest career win. Tony might have come in under 220 for a rematch with Joe. A return would have been good publicity, and good box office.

Nobody else ever came off the floor to return the favor to Louis, and it was rare when a vanquished opponent of his instantly rebounded with the best win on his record. In November or December 1939, Louis-Godoy II could have been a highly viable promotion with guaranteed fireworks.

That's just it. In going 15 tough rounds with Louis, snapping his knockout streak and actually winning in the minds of some, a rematch from the champion was due to Godoy.

    Two-Ton did no such thing.

Neither did Buddy Baer. However, Buddy did get a return go without competing in the interim, and after arguably sustaining a more severe beating.

For Galento to get a rematch though, he either had to be fitted into Joe's schedule between Louis-Pastor II and Louis-Godoy I, or defeat one of the Baer brothers. As Johnny Paychek was on such a good streak going into his March 1940 title shot, Galento was not likely to displace him between Louis-Godoy I & II. For Tony, the iron was hottest after Nova, in late 1939.

With such an enthusiastic promotor as yourself, my friend, Galento wouldn't need any enemies!

Didn't the Buddy affair end in at least quasi controversy?

There was hardly an atom of controversy once Louis was done with the fresh Galento.

Well, he certainly didn't shy away from lethal opponents, did he?
He and his corner were never going to steal the title from an established reigning champion on the disqualification win they were seeking. Let's assume that final knockdown punch at the bell was never launched. Buddy had already gotten dropped hard twice, struggling desperately to beat the count each time, was reeling drunkenly about when upright between knockdowns one and two, and had virtually no chance to survive round seven. (Now you can tack on the fact that just a single right was needed to drop Buddy on his face at the bell.)
And perhaps atoms would be all that was left of Galento following a rematch. (You fished the bait, so the least I could do is offer the desired strike at it.) However, after he dropped Joe, an emboldened Tony reverted to street fighter mode, after his corner admonished him to keep low. Of course he was never going to beat Louis, but he did make the Bomber's finishing job easier with poor judgment. He showed up for the streaking Nova much lighter and displayed championship round stamina he may not have been expected by many to possess beforehand, making a case that he might be a newer, smarter and more improved Galento for a return title engagement.

Buddy never displayed the resilience which saw Tony get off the deck for the first time in his career to put Louis in the same place. Buddy was very obviously still out of it when the bell rang to commence round seven. Was that all due to the final punch? I'm convinced there's a good chance his corner retires him before round seven even without it.

If I was Mike Jacobs, I know which contender I would have been banking on being able to draw the larger gate-the guy who proved he could come back after getting hurt and dropped by Louis.

He probably would have been given another shot, but after beating Nova he faced some controversy when it was alleged that Harry Thomas had thrown fights against both him and Max Schmeling. The NY Commission suspended Galento. He did however end the year as the number 1 contender by the NBA's reckoning.

Then it was agreed that he should fight Max Baer before getting another shot at Louis, althought there were delays in the fight being finalised because Galento's manager Joe Jacobs wanted assurances that he'd get a shot if he won, believing Mike Jacobs (promoter in charge of Louis and the title) had gone back on the promise to deliver after Galento beat Nova.

Then, Galento's manager died before the Baer fight, causing another postponement. When fight time came, Galento was well out of shape and washed-up, and Baer battered him. In his next fight, he was battered by Maxie's brother Buddy.
