Rodriguez was another tough fighter Ward beat. Bute fought his first true threat and got ktfo. People weren't sold on Bute even after he got revenge on Andrade. People remembered when Bute needed home cooking against Andrade in the first fight.

 

And what made Rodriguez tough? Him beating Grachev

Bute had a much better résumé at the time than Rodriguez ever had, yet Ward turned down the fight saying he hadn't beat anyone.

You can't even admit is was a fight people wanted to see.

People weren't sold on him?... yet the ring ranked him as #1 at SMW (Unjustly sure). Fans where massively sold on him. That's what makes him the quintessential hype job. Loads bought into that hype, and loads wanted to see that fight.

We can all talk in hindsight that he was a bum, a hypejob and unworthy. We know that now, we didn't at the time though.

 

Why do you keep mentioning Rodriguez first off? Bute/Ward could've been made AFTER Ward and Bute won their respective fights, lmao. Fans would've been sold on Bute had he beaten Froch but that didn't happen. I have nothing against Bute. That fight was not in demand at that time.

* Being a world champ longer than Ward
* Having had more title defences
* Having won more fights against top 10 comp
* Being the highest rated SMW by some, and if you are one of the ones who think The Ring mag is the thing to follow, then Bute was the #1 behind Ward as champ, though I did have queries with the ratings around that time
* Looking overall more impressive against common opponents

Look at Butes last 7 fights and look at Wards.

Also, check and see what their records are in that time span.

With that came a lot of hype, and a lot of demand to see the perceived #1 and #2 of the division face off. Especially when the #1 had otherwise cleared out the division.

 

Whats last 7 fighters got to do with it? Ward was in the S6 comp and did get 2 good names in that time in Kessler and Froch, but that doesnt remove it that he was not interested in Bute who was his biggest rival.
As Kessler is still arguably Wards biggest win and Kessler then, had not beaten a top SMW for 3 years, had lost to an old end of career champ having his last fight at the weight, had been off for long periods. All that is forgotten in the hype. Froch, had even lost to Kessler.
Bute in that time could be argued to have done more than either in those 3 years, and if you look at Wards top 5 wins, many would put Bika in that list and Bute had already beaten him

 

How did Ward clear out the division? He beat a faded unwell Kessler who then beat Froch who beat Bute.
Tell me what top undefeated SMW did Ward face?

The only reason Kessler wasn't undefeated is because he ran into an ATG in Sir Joe.
