Was Steward ever a pro? I know he had a great amateur career so I would not call him a bad fighter at all. Floyd Sr was not a bad fighter either....

I Think it may be harder for good fighters to have patience to teach less gifted fighters moves that came naturally to them.

It's the same reason that very gifted athletes tend to make poor coaches, but their perspective on the game is based on their own immense ability. Great players can be great coaches, but usually it's the more cerebral types who do the best job.

One has nothing to do with the other. You can be very intelligent and capable when it comes to the science and techniques of boxing and just not have the physical tools to do it, yet be very well at conveying your knowledge and have great analyzation skills. You can also have that same knowledge and capabilities, and not be able to convey them.....this is the category I would most likely place guys like Tyson and Hopkins. Both extremely knowledgable of all aspects of boxing, but I highly doubt either one of them would make good trainers. Then you just have ****ing idiots who can do what they have been taught, and put that together with their great athleticism.....Zab Judah.

i think what you're saying is why can't great fighter like robinson, hearns, leonard, pep etc. become trainers.

Well, i guess if you are a great fighter you already have a lot of money and would rather enjoy your life rather than becoming a trainer. But those guys you've mention i guess love the sport too much and would stay close to it.

btw, how do you explain cory spinks, obviously came from his family of boxing who trained him and those are great fighters. Also Laila Ali

Often what happens is that decent boxers who are trying to compete against boxers who are more naturally gifted than they are must perfect their craft to the fullest in order to even have a shot at beating them.
