Why do boxers, box, so infrequently nowadays?

Willie Pep - for example - used to fight pretty much every month (sometimes 3 times a month).

I guess there is not a neccessity anymore. They get paid handsomely.

Honestly dont know, it pisses me off. Even not so long ago it wasnt a big deal to fight 4 times a year, now youre lucky its 2.

In a way I find it frustrating though. Take Witter for example - a loss to Bradley, and at his age, with little time, I'd guess he would be straight back in the ring. Near 6 months later there is still little hapening...

There must be a money promotion element involved as well, imo, where it doesn't pay to fight that freqently.... the boxers have to wait perhaps...

It's true it's now once every 6 months (if you're lucky), and then you're not guaranteed them fighting quality - I think it's killing the game a bit.

I suppose people would get bored seeing your ugly ass every week. TV wouldn't dig it.

Not that its an excuse for Witter.

    • James "Lights out" Toney and Mike Tyson in his early days where the last of the busy busy fighters. Mike Tyson would fight every 2 - 3 weeks, and James Toney was also very busy in his early career.

Completley agree, and the Witter example is a good one, he was awful on the night and quite clearly looking beyond but he still got close SD, yet his handlers or whoever(maybe him i dont know) wait so long to get him back in, he didnt take punishment and he's still highly thought of by the WBC. It's not lunacy to think he could have been back in line for a shot or a rematch if wanted by now. The inactivity is one of the few things that genuinely **** me off about the modern fight game.

A lot of its due the poor perception of a loss, years ago when a boxer went 8-1-1 in a year it was considered a decent run of fights. Now everyone pulls apart every result and the loses are the end of the world, even the points wins get criticized.

Also, a much quicker road to a title. Pick up an alphabelt and call yourself champ.

Funny thing is, some of the boxers in the long, long ago pretty much did.

Promotion... How can De La Hoya, Mayweather, Jones Calzaghe e.t.c be fighting every month or so when they need time to travel to different cities and countries to do press tours, HBO needs time to get all this footage for a Countdown or 24/7 series ... Producers need time to work with the footage...

I think its obvious isnt it?

Agree, far too much is placed on a loss nowadays.

What about the fighters that don't have all the promotional stuff? Even relatively unknown top 10 guys only fight 3 or 4 times a year.
