It's all about the money, definately true. But those shows arent all about building the fight for the ppv customers, its about advertising for adverts/commercials and the maximum money being brought in for the studio. A fight(if big enough) sells itself. Im in the UK and wont recieve the other add on shows but you can guarentee I'll pay for a boxing PPV without the extended hype surrounding.
I cant answer for everyone? Who knows ... I think theres alot more crap to get through these days like cards to fight on everyone has a promoter or a manager ... If your with a certain manager you cant get a fight with a guy because he is promoted by a guy who hates the manager of the other guy and refuses to do business (think Arum and Haymon) .... If u sign a deal you may not like the promoter but you have to sign a deal saying if u win that promoter has options on you this and that rah rah rah... Its alot more messy these days.... But younger guys do fight often look at Yuriorkis Gamboa turned pro in 07 and he already has 12 fights all over the world thats not bad
Thats because we are boxing fans and love the sport... Countdowns and 24/7s and arent made with you or me in mind they are made with the intention of getting people who arent fans of the sport to spend 55 bucks on a PPV... You say u dont need those shows to buy fights... Neither do i... we are boxing fans mate thats what we do
Willie Pep, pretty much one of the top ten greatest ever boxers, a top draw boxer - averaged 9 fights a year between 1940, and 1966. I mean - it's not yesterday, but 1966 isn't a million years ago.
I'm not asking you answer for everyone mate, but check out Boxrec for the records any of the greats from the 30s-60s before they became champ. Its not all down the promotional ties or 24/7s.....
True but did they have worldwide press tours, countdowns and 24/7s in 1966? I dont mean to argue with u mate or anyone i would love it if fighters fought more but i think its pretty obvious as to why they dont fight as often these days
True but you have to remember fighters dont fight as much today in general anyway... Were you used to have 30-40 fights in the old days before fighting for a title, now guys with 20 bouts can fight for a title
I know that no argument at all... But you have fighters doing that today to... Look at how many fights Gamboa, Pavlik, Cotto, Mayweather all had at the start of their carrers... Not nearly as much as Tyson who had 28 in his first 2 years, but still as i said i think the game has changed... Fighters are signed to promoters and advisors and managers from their first bout so they are moved along in a way that allows them to fight for a title after 20 or so fights... Promoters and the such dont want there guys having 28 fights in 2 years
I'm sure a lot of it is that one loss and you're ****ed these days. Years ago a boxer could just rematch the guy next month....
Yep... One loss today and out goes your lovely little 0 and all of a sudden you have been exposed you suck and are never guna make it... Promoters dont like you because ur not undefeated .... Its all bull****
You are right bud we dont need the 24/7's and the hype i agree, but the channels make a packet from the 24/7's in advertising in the breaks and selling them to other country's. In the UK HBO demand over a million to show it over here per episode, thats money to the channels not the fighters. If somebody's intrested enough to watch the 24/7's at the start they will purchase the fight anyway.
Another point is quality of opposition... Not in all cases but Mike Tyson in his first year if fighting had 15 fights... Now Gamboa only had 7 half of that... But if you look at who Tyson fought as opposed to who Gamboa fought, you might rather a guy only have half the fights but they are against good oppostion, than have a guy who fight 15 times in a year but they are bassically a bunch of first round KO's In Tyson first year of fighting he fought a combined 22 rounds in 15 bouts Gamboa fought 20 rounds in 7 bouts
Very good question and I think the answer is only $$. The fighters dont want to risk anything, yet want paid millions. They make WAY more now than before and they take far less risks. Boxing used to be a pure man's sport, but it is not quite like that anymore. Its sad IMO, but I still live the sport.
