Why do boxing fans what fighters to move up all the time!?!?!

I think fighters should move up, within reason, when they've fought every name worth mentioning in their division.

Edit: Unless they've reached their peak division.

 

But you said "If you're so good that guys you're own size don't stand a chance". In that situation you should move up. Why not challenge yourself against a bigger opponent like many, many fighters have done through the history of the sport?

 

History also remembers the fighters who dominated men their own size very well. Like Carlos Monzon.

 

For the same reason that they don't like seeing fighters matched soft against weak opposition. They want to see a fighter fighting the best, at the limits of his ability, in a close competitive fight. Dominant performances over no hopers don't have the same appeal.

 

Go ask Pac why he moved from 105 to 112 to 122 to 126 then 130 135 then 140 147 and 152

 

Well 147 is like the cutoff for attention in America. Below that and people just start thinking the fighters are too small.

And Pac started out as a malnourished teenager. I bet you they don't have 700 dollar monthly food stamps over there.

 

Indeed but any fighter will get more admiration if they move up to challenge themselves rather than stay in one division and fight opponent that they are heavily favoured over.

This thread is about why people want to see fighters move up, well one of the reasons people want some dominant guys to move up is because it's interesting to see people challenge themselves. It was impressive to see Floyd move up and become the best WW in the world, it's a big part of the reason he is considered the #1 P4P fighter on the planet and one of the greatest of all time. Same for Pacquiao, RJJ and all the others who have done it.

 

Some guys frames dictate moving up. As you age the body tends to put on weight.

Carlos Monzon rates higher than any of those guys you just mentioned and he stayed at Middleweight. So you don't have to move up to find greatness. It's just an avenue that some choose.

It's usually the haters that want boxers to move up and get pounded by some bigger guy.

 

Ward has cleaned out his division he doesn't have to move up but what's left for him especially if he wants the big fights

 

I agree with that, I'm not saying it's necessary I'm just answering the question in the thread title.

I don't agree with this. There are just as many non-haters who would like to see fighters move up for the interesting match ups and to see if a fighter can be successful in the next division. Most of the haters go both ways. For example they want GGG to move up but don't want Ward to move up or they want Ward to move up but they don't want GGG to move up etc.

 

Same I just feel like boxing would be better if we cut some weight classes. Put 1 title per weight class. Guys fought at their natural weight.
