Re: Khan It is partly down to him reminding us of Fraudley in his hand picking of opponents. In this case, it is because he is protecting his chin. British fans are angry at being victims of fraud with olympic prospects turned pro, and Amirs choice of opponents (with low Ko records, but being decked by lower level fighters on approx five ocassions adds to this). There is then the racial aspect of British fans supporting a British Pakistani who is a muslim. You make up your mind...
I just think it has more to with how some British Fans post threads like "Euros taking Over Boxing" ...when you provoke Americans they come at you full steam and we do stick together.
Basic facts: Calzeghe never fought anybody dangerous. Khan is uproven. Hatton lost his two big fights via KO. There is not a lot to respect there.
True stuff. I'm British, and I'm willing to admit that rarely do our best fighters manage to live up to America's best fighters. You look at the greats, and practically all of them are American or Latinos. So yeah, our fighters suck in comparison to you lot
Khan gets ridiculous hype over here by the media, ever since the olympics infact and it's a little hard for some people to stomach, myself included but to his credit he has had sackloads of money thrown at him for doing very little and has remained hungry, good luck to him.
Khan will get respect if he beats Paulie and either Bradley or Alexander. Personally, I don't see it happenning, but that's what it will take. Right now he's basically a first round draft pick whose gotten the dollars but hasn't played a down. Let him loose and let him earn his respect.
So only Hattons losses count as big fights?? how bout Tszyu, Malignaggi and Collazo. Lacy and Kessler were considered very dangerous going into the Calzaghe fights. Amir Khan remains to be seen.
Also regarding Khan and the hate he recieves (which is a heck of a lot), you'll find different reasons for why this is so. - His success, which of course is a petty reason. - Somewhat protected career (but that's with all British fighters), so to single Khan out for this is very unfair. - Race, again which is pathetic reason to hate him. - The stuff he spouts. Whilst it's nothing on the level of Mayweather, he says silly things sometimes. Especially recently with the Froch comments **Oh and it's important to note, he gets a fair bit of stick from even the Muslim community here in the UK. I know lads that hate him with a passion
To the average American sports fan, Hatton lost the only two fights he was in by KO. Calzaghe/Kessler was a snore-fest without any US hype which went largely unwatched, but was a competitive matchup on paper. I forgot about Lacy being considered a top prospect at one point. We agree on Khan.
Before we distort the past too much.... let's remember that Lennox was indeed heavily criticized during his career. It was afterwards when he became this mythic great fighter. I like him alot. But time does something to most peoples' minds..... and ignorance of actual context does something to more recent fans' minds.
^^^THIS^^^ For some reason it is the Brits who hate on Naseem . . . I was a Big fan. Hatton was overrated and when he got beat all his fans turned his back on him. JC is overrated and his fans talk ****.
Lacy was picked by almost everyone to beat calzaghe, kessler was just classed a s great win for Ward, hopkins beat pavlik who some classed as better than calzaghe. Some one mentioned khan would get respect if he beat paulie yet hatton already beat paulie and gets no respect? Wish we could pull up the lacy vs calzaghe threads just to show ho many people hyped LAcy up to high heavens and gave calzaghe no chance at all.
