Why do de la Hoya fights make so much more money than any other fights?

Come on, his skin color is white and 9 out of 10 people would agree with my comment. Who care's if he's Mexican, he's more Mexican American anyway.

to explain this you have to look at dlh's beginnings and boxing history. dlh's story is similar to the amir khan situation you have in the UK.

oscar won a gold medal in the olympics, while having a great backstory in doing so (promising his dying mother olympic gold, son of mexican immigrants achieving the american dream more or less etc...). such success stories are usually eaten up by the masses, the seeds for his popularity therefore were sown. naturally, promoters coveted for his signature as he was seen to be a potential money earner (ala khan). bob arum (along with king, one of the most powerful promoters in the world), who turned SRL into a 80's megastar, eventually got dlh into his roster and the rest is history (ala khan). now this was a time when the golden boy/face of boxing/massive earner of the past decade, SRL, was at the end of his career. tyson (the other face in boxing) was in prison. boxing needed a fresh face, and oscar delivered. dlh appealed to the casual fans (oscarsexuals as jack puts it:lol:)and even to people who did'nt follow the sport (again oscarsexuals), as he was good looking, had great success in the olympics etc.... to an extent he was also seen as the symbol of the "model minority". in short the hype generated, got on well with the people (oscarsexuals once again). if i'm not mistaken oscar was getting million dollar paydays while fighting six rounders. so whenever dlh fights, interest is generated even among non fans; and in this sport, mass interest = mass money. some others could probably elaborate further, but this is more or less why oscar has massive drawing power.

dlh can probably be categorized as white, as there are lots of criollo's (white descendants of spaniards other europeans) in mexico. see their entertaiment industry, business sector, politics etc.... areas where they are well represented.

Gold medal winners get a huge leg up on other boxers upon turning pro. Look at Ray Leonard, Ali,Foreman,Frazier, Ect... Plus he kept his nose clean & was promoted very well.

Oscar isn't white and he isn't a criollo, he's a chicano. Like many people of northern mexican decent he's a mixture of indian and euro blood. Look at his family and you will see he came out a little "whiter" than the others but his blood is still the same. As many mexicans of mixed heritage can tell you one brother might come out darker and the other lighter. I just have to set this straight for all those outside the Raza who do not understand anything if it isn't following north american race/gene understanding which is more akin to apartheid South Africa and Reich Germany than the rest of the world.

Next, Oscar became widely popular because he achieved olympic gold and had a good story along with him, being a good looking kid didn't hurt either. He entered as a professional at a very young age and went on an undefeated streak which coupled with the rest gave him the clout to sell tickets and sell a lot. There is something else about Oscar I think is important, despite having a crowd pleasing style he was always a vulnerable boxer and feeling like the fight could go either way when he entered a ring gave his fights a further excitement.
