Why do most fighters usually only fight 2-3 times a year?

Did May and Pac nearly kill a man in the ring, sink into what was described as depression, and start performing so badly in the ring they lost their press and had to rebuilt?

Jimmy Bivins fought 14 times from 42 to 44, 12 of these men were top 10 rated contenders...

Maybe not necessarily the fight but at 38 years old maybe the 10 weeks or however long it was did.

It does not take 8 months to recover from a fight then prepare for the next. And boxing isn't so risky that even that best should be fighting less than three times a year. Sure fighting every month would be risky, but there's nothing wrong with 3 or 4, even 6 times a year.

Fighting consistently keeps you in shape, keeps you sharp and improves your skill, and of course keeps the boxing public interested. If you aren't injured or cut get back in the ring in 3 months at most!

As recently as the late 90s the best fighters usually fought 3 or 4 times a year rather than twice as they do now. De la Hoya fought 5 times in 1997, as the biggest draw in boxing. He fought again just 2 months after beating Whitaker. In 1999 when he fought 2 superfights against Trinidad and Quartey he managed to fit Oba Carr in between.

I can't believe most of the posts are defending fighters getting in the ring twice a year. Inactivity is the single major problem with boxing today. And come on, the best fight each other less than they did in the past, so there's no proof that fighting twice makes for better matchups. In fact, fighting more often would mean there's more chance for fighters to distinguish themselves, so it would be clearer who the best are, and they'd have more room in their schedules to fight each other.

    Yo dumbass ,

Ray Robinson lost to Jake LaMotta , fought a tune up , hen fought and beat LaMotta again - all within the space of a single month. 30 rounds boxed. 20 against an ATG and hall of famer.

Yeah LaMotta was real pathetic :patsch:barf

Modern guys like Wlad need 8 months off after fighting the lowest of the low - Pianeta - Wach , Lepai etc.

A fight takes too much out of modern era boxers. Thats is why thay are unable to enter the ring again for another 6 months- Against total bottom feeders

I think that they are pussies who cynically view their profession as a business and have no pride. They could fight ten times a year against the best with no trouble but they are greedy and have learned how to milk nonsense fights for more money. It's why the sport isn't more popular.

    Berto??
You mean the last fight he ever fought?

How is that a good example of not fighting enough. He hasn't fought AT ALL since. He could have KO'd Berto in 12 seconds and not fought since, because he retired!

Yea young stribling definitely holds the record for fighting the most in a calendar year. Some of his fights were separated by a few days.
