why do most talented boxers nowadays have poor punch resistance/ glass jaws?

Not any different from any other time we're just harder on people nowadays.

Hearns had a glass jaw according to some.

Duran today in his fight against Hearns would have been "exposed" on ESB.

Because (apparently) what is defined as a 'glass jaw' has been stretched to the ridiculous on this forum.

I don't think Bute or Pavlik are hugely talented. The guy is talking like we should have been hanging our hats on them to become p4p greats, but they both have too many flaws and it shouldn't be a suprise if they are hurt.

Cotto and Gamboa are more talented, the formers defeat wasn't **** to do with his chin and the second has not even been legitimately hurt from a legal punch.

Pavlik is a high workrate guy with very good power but he doesn't show the raw talent that true athletes possess... In Bute's case, he is physically gifted and is an above average boxer based on his natural ability ! You underestimate Bute's tools !!

Cotto and Gamboa are very good talents but in Cotto's case...he use to be less fluid than he's been since the Mosley fight...

I wouldn't disagree with what you're saying. But does it come to a big surprise to you like it seems to for the thread starter? To me it doesn't. These are not special talents that I would be surprised to see beaten and hurt. Of course they are talented by normal standards, but at the absolute top level I'd say no. It depends what you judge them against.

They are not the best talents in boxing either, not by a long way. Yet he seems to be using them as evidence of todays talented fighters having glass jaws because they got hurt.

As much as i don't like him Khan offensively is quite clearly talented and if he had a chin would go very far in boxing

I think part of da problem is how the amatuers work nowadays-Computer soring. Its like a game of tag to gain points, then there out again.Heavyweights especially can reach national amatuer level without never really been hit that hard.

Don't really agree with your assesment.

To answer you Title question, you can train boxing skills but you can't train chin. You either have it or you don't. Sweet science is the are of hitting without getting hit. Great boxers' chins are rarely tested until its too late.

When will people shut the **** up about this bull****? Half the people on ESB just love saying that every fighter has a 'glass jaw'.

Bute has a glass jaw because he got knocked down after taking a lot of heavy shots from a hard puncher?

Cotto has a glass jaw because he took a TKO loss after getting beaten up badly by a hard puncher?

Kelly Pavlik has a glass jaw because he was beaten by Hopkins (not knocked down), who is btw, a HARD puncher if he actually sits down on his punches. Hopkins doesn't throw hard usually, but people who work with him (sparring included) have always said he's a hard puncher, at least in the interviews I've read. And he knocked down Calzaghe - but why aren't you saying he has a weak chin? Taylor knocked down Pavlik, but it took a punch of super hard right hands to do it.

All I hear on this forum is 'so and so has a glass jaw'. People take it to the extreme BIG time not in just how often they say it, but to the degree. I've seen a number of people say stuff like "Khan has the worst chin I've seen on a boxer EVER"

Stop being so melodramatic people, its getting old. No, wait. It IS old. Just plain old, and stupid.

Cotto doesn't have a glass jaw/low punch resistance. OMG are people still arguing this? anybody with one eye would recognize that Cotto got beaten because of Margarito's PRESSURE. He arguably took 5 rounds of absolute beating from Margarito. Anybody would go down from that.

Bute has a good chin IMO. What happened to him was the same thing that happened to Cotto. He couldn't cope with the INTENSE pressure that Andrade was throwing at him.

Its not that these guys have low punch resistance. Their opponents are just THAT good with what they do(i.e Pressure).

    i like miguel but
chop chop had cotto badly hurt and this was before cotto was struggling to make weight, b4 the low bows happened cotto was being handled by judah,an old man called shane mosely also hurt miguel then the loyal HBO ref came in the way of things and gave cotto a breather before escaping with a UD, His chin isnt glass but his punch resistance isnt all that great either
