its a balance. you need to be muscular, cos muscles equals strength, but not so muscular you lose flexibility, leverage, lightness, and fluidity of motion.

theres a difference between power and strength. bradley s stronger than pac, but pac is more powerful. bradley can push a boulder up a hill but he cant snap a shot like pac can. a strong guy is like as bruce lee said a big thick wooden staff, hurts as hell and strong. but a powerful guy is like a ball on the end of a chain- with snap and whip, and far more damaging.

    High school scirence here- F=ma
the powerful guys bring the mass- but the quicker , snappier , leaner guys bring the acceleration. the best punchers , like the best leapers, have power and speed, and thats how they bring the pain. Guys like hearns have tremendous long arms, and leverage so his straight right- was like a baseball pitchers fastball- plenty of space to go back and plenty of space to go forward, accelerate and hit. Long guys have that advantage with straight shots. Shorter stockier guys have the advantage of torque and turning power, compactness, so their hooks tend to be better. Guys like tyson for example. And then you have guys that have a bit of both, like trinidad, roy jones, ali- pacuqiao , who seem to be able to knock guys out with any punch.

The athletic comparison gradient to me would be weighlifters versus gymnasts versus ballet. all amazing phsyiques and can do what the other man cant- and all with benefits and costs. But the ideal to me for boxing is somewhere in between, as pacquiao , roy, etc have. of course there are exceptions, and technique is a big factor, as is accurarcy and skill and all that.

oh and of course, the feet are very important. strong legs equals strong base, and turning power and balance , leverage etc. you can throw a strong punch without much arm movement based of legs- but its hard the other way around, the legs anchor the weight of your body into the punch. Kung Fu masters used to explain it by saying- you get your power from the earth.

The word "musclebound" in the thread subject largely explains it all.

God given gift, punchers are born not made....you can be mr universe but it doesn't mean you can punch. KO's wont come from someone whos all tight and slow. KO's happen when a fighter is loose, throws his punches with rapid speed and bad intentions

Alot of guys that put lifting into their training get too caught up in technique. Lifting weights makes you control your movements constantly. Somewhere in the back of their head they dont follow through as much. Thats why a lot of old school trainers dont believe in it. When your lean your also timid about lettin off with too much steam. get injured at lower bodyfat easier.

Too bulky a lot of times effects World Class Speed, and when this happens World Class Fighters can see the shots coming.

    Don't necessarily mean no power.

I had an old timer that asked me to show him my fist. He grabed it in his hand and moved it around with some force with his hand. He said my fist strength was not bad.

    Stupid question.

Do you understand the definition of "muscle bound ?"

If the question was supposed to be, "Why Do well-muscled Fighters Have No Power?" Then the answer is: They do. They just don't typically have more than less-muscled fighters, since power comes mostly from speed & leverage.

Also: Strong leg & back muscles help punching, strong abs & neck muscles help you take a punch.

One downside of having a lot of muscles is that this taxes your heart, (lots of extra blood vessels to pump blood through) giving you worse aerobic performance. So, a heavier fighter (all things being equal) will have a better chance of gassing out in the late rounds.

Rocky Marciano and Vitali Klitschko have the highest KO% in HW Champion history and they ain't exactly Mr. Universe types. Neither were Joe Louis or Muhammad Ali for that matter. I've seen muscle bound fighters who are feather fisted like Tye Fields for example.
