Actually, the music analogy is accurate and runs very parallel to sports. In each, most of the so-called stars today are created more by marketing (networks) than true talent. As example, it is more profitable for the networks to manufacture a star than to manage deal with the demands and ego of a true talent.
Look at Frank Warden's management of Calzaghe or the Danish management of Kessler, where it was more profitable to tuck them away in their home environments fighting bums, rather than risk their paydays by bringing them to the mecca of boxing the USA. It was purely a marketing decision versus what was best for the sport. :yep

Not to mention, ancient fighters also get these super powers that they never had. I mean really with Ali knocking Tyson out cold? Come on now, Ali scored his fair share of ko/tko but let's be real.

old school fighters rnt bums..but them saying todays crop are is a joke..it is true some guys rnt as tuff anymore but to say guys from today wouldnt compete or rule in any other era is foolish and is tinted glasses..but jumping around the ring is rather overboard lol...

Good point and although no Ali or Jones Jr(athletic or ability wise)... Techinichally ahead of his time along with being Fast,good legs and a tough beard.. Even Ali was impressed with his footage,and mentioned how far ahead he was.

When you stop to look at James Toney of MODERN times who is a FAT overfed middleweight AND until recently a rated heavyweight contender, well - this tells you just how wonderful and skilled and athletic and full of crap the modern era is. Don't throw too many rocks at 2 ton Tony Galento - who BTW has 80 wins and 57KO's - more than Toney and all of his were against Heavyweights and therefore against better competition. The reason boxing is about to DIE is all the messed up MODERN stuff. That said, Pacman is a bright and shining star in a desolate era. I have long said that if a modern fighter could UNIFY and CLEAN OUT 8 divisions in the modern era he would Begin to approach what Hank Armstrong once did. Pacman as about 2/3's of the way to greatness in my book and before he is done may well stand beside some of the greats of the past. With multiple ABC belts smeared over as many as 17-19 divisions you have a very diluted championshp status. Money drives all decisions in this era - not the sport - not the fans. Most fighters today end careers with 30-40 fights. Hary Greb who you disdain while admitting you know NOTHING about him fought 37 times just in 1917 and won 34 of those fights. HE had an entire modern career in one year! Weigh-ins today are a sad joke - with welters entering the ring north of 160. They must weigh in AT the fight. be at or under 147 as a welter when you enter the ring or go up in weightclass. There must be strict testing of all fighters for "help" from the drug industry and bans for LIFE for cheating. GO back to 1 minute before the fight weigh ins with forfit penalty for missing the weight, 8 weight classes and one champ per class (a REAL world champ not an abc dude with nice hair) or see this sad farce that is modern boxing die to MMA. In the old days even casual fans knew the history of the sport and had respect and admiration for the greats of the past who built the foundation of the sport they loved. The average fan of today has a memory that stretches all the way back to mid 2008.

You ask a good question - Why do people compare old time fighters to modern boxers - they shouldn't. On a level playing field these young ignorant puppies don't stand a chance...

 

if there was no pre-modern then modern era wouldn't exist. So is normal to compare now and then. Its pretty obvious.
