Why do people feel that Ward has to box perfectly against Kovalev?

Is Kovalev that powerful? Is Ward's chin that terrible? Is this really a Khan vs Canelo type of situation? It's starting to seem that the consensus is that if Ward gets hit flush then he'll be ktfo which is quite odd given that lesser fighters have sustained prolonged punishment for numerous rounds against Kovalev who's thought to be a murderous puncher. So what's up, why is Ward the only one who'll be 1 punch KO'd by the first power punch to land?

Kovalev has a good chin. He will likely be able to take whatever Ward can throw at him because Ward does not have much power. Kovalev, in addition to being a fine boxer, has crushing power. Not to say Ward has a bad chin, but if he makes a mistake Sergei can hurt him, as he has hurt practically every dude he has fought with.

It's one of those situations where the guy most people say is the better boxer (Ward) has to execute perfectly because he neither has the power to dent Kovalev nor the chin to take his flush shots.

I get some of that, however, everyone else makes mistakes against Kovalev for six or seven rounds and occasionally twelve yet if Ward doesn't box the perfect mistake free fight then it's game over? Sounds stupid and unrealistic. But I guess time will tell.

Yeah. I don't think it's quite that either.

Of course Kovalev has the power advantage and can afford to make more mistakes than Ward but imo, there's some exaggeration regarding Ward's fragility in some of the ****ysis around here.

People get a bit carried away when it comes to guys with power. They can badly hurt a guy with one punch but it's true that not every punch they land knocks the guy out.

And Ward could possibly hurt Kovalev. Sometimes even guys who are known to lack power can hurt guys. Bradley has hurt guys, Floyd has hurt guys etc.

:conf Hey, fair enough. If old man Hopkins can make 12 then surely so could Ward.

Initially I thought Kovalev would massacre him. After the Chilemba fight I had serious misgivings about how easy it would be. But then Ward laboured to a win against whatsisname from somewheresville and then pendulum swung back again.

I suspect that form on the day is going to play a big part.

 Ignore those people. They are the same who rooted against Mayweather EVERY fight and of course, were wrong.
Kovalev is far from a perfect fighter and is far less skilled than Ward.

Ward can make mistakes because Kovalev will not be able to capitalize on them.
Ward is the betting favourite for a good reason.

Like Ward said in a recent interview: "These Europeans want to take what we have, but I'm not having it. Without using massive PEDS, they don't stand a chance". :smoke

Since when were you supposed to root for the fighter you think is going to win? Rooting for somebody isn't the same as saying they're going to win. Nobody was wrong just because they rooted against Mayweather.

Who says you have to him him the **** out with 1 flush shot?

As soon as Kovalev hits someone flush they run away and the fight is over. He wins on points because they run or they fight back and get destroyed.

As soon as Kovalev lands Ward will run.

Sergey Kovalev is a very, very strong man.

Ward will obviously try to avoid Kovalev's punches and land his own. We will see what happens if/when Ward gets hit flush.

Big punchers have been beaten and out boxed before.

Of course they were wrong, not once or twice, but many many times.

If they rooted against Mayweather, then they were rooting against me. If they rooted against me, then of course they were as wrong as fuk! :yep

He won't want to take any chances on testing Kovalev's power.

Because Ward has a suspect chin and Kovalev is a murderous puncher and also a very calculated boxer. That's why.
