    I'd say unaesthetic, not unimpressive.

Greatness is often misunderstood by people who don't know what they are witnessing.

Very traditional fighter not known for excitement but given his success who cares honestly. Everything else is just personal preferences doesn't take away from what he did in the ring. I like his showings against Napoles, Valdez n Briscoe but not everyone is gonna like those as much as me which is fine.

I do, Monzon was my favorite World Middleweight Champion, I even ran into him at a boxing match.

There isn't much to add to what's already been said. At first a young fighter or fan might not get all that big a thrill watching him for all the reasons previously stated, (not flashy, not overly fast, doesn't run his mouth like all the nonsense BS we have today).

I personally am a big fan of his. I liked his calm demeanor and all-business attitude. He was a guy who might not look sensational in any particular area, but he knew how and when to put it all together. He knew how to use his physical attributes. He had an enigmatic quality about him.

Don't forget, he was of the era of the 15 rounders. Those extra three rounds can make a big difference. You had to be a little more conservative, a little more aware of pacing yourself. 15 rounds was a hike...

    Cause frankly, he was boring.

One of the very best, but boring.

There's plenty of good quality footage of Monzon. It's your first comment for mine, not fast or flashy. One could add subtle too.

Fine opening post Blo. Objective and articulate.

I think it would only take one fantasy fight against any one of those fighters nominated to be more modern, flashy and/or skilled than Monzon to perhaps drastically change some people’s opinions on how effective the steady as she goes Monzon could be.

I think the guy could hit consistently harder than many might credit him - Valdez’s grotesquely misshapen face after the rematch being a heavy testament to that power.

Aside from whoever you might figure to win, I think the stylistic mesh arising from a prime Monzon v prime Hagler match would’ve made for a helluva fight, and perhaps be surprisingly pleasing to the eye at the same time.

As an aside, film quality is an issue I find fascinating. This is in regard mainly to what we have from say, 80-100 years ago or so. I think the old timers are at a real disadvantage when H2H matches are discussed because of the quality, but it may apply here.

Many of the Monzon fights I've seen were pretty shoddy and I think quality has now improved to the point where even 70's guys can't be fully appreciated like modern fighters. Monzon's intensity was, I believe, one of his strongest attributes and these kinds of things often don't come across well when watching. I believe this intensity won him many fights, or at least was a major component in them, and is a big part of why watching him should be enthralling.

Subtly and nuance, facial expression, verbal exchanges between fighters, being able to hear the punches land (very important) - these things, and many others are, I believe, major connecting points with this generation of fans. They feel closer to their favorite fighters, who are more real to them, more alive. I mean come on, how could someone watching Prince Naz flying on a magic carpet to the ring, not love that? Or stare in awe and disbelief as cannibalism proved to be alive & well in the year 1997, all in hi def on giant flat screens. Yum.

I've written several detailed Monzon posts on the forum the past few weeks, and I won't take the time to write another one here, so the short answer:

People who find Monzon unimpressive on film don't know about boxing.

Monzon radiated pure venom & savagery to me, one of the very few fighters that opponents were actually "scared of". He seemed to me to be extremely intimidating in there, just as much as Liston or Duran or Tyson or anyone.

I think if Monzon were fighting today, his genuinely dangerous persona and violent nature would be the source of endless internet debates/discussion.

Thanks very much and for your interesting thoughts. Valdez was also looking pretty battered after the first fight as well!
