I think you will enjoy them, not sure how old you are but for myself as a fan who grew up on 12 round fights it took me a while to adjust to watching the different pacing of a 15 rounders. Nothing seems to happen in the first 4 rounds but once you get to the end you see how those crucial early rounds made a difference. I always felt Hagler fought with a 15 rounder in mind against Leonard, he didn't adjust his strategy to the shorter fight!

The Valdez fights are exciting due to the tension, they only explode occasionally but they are fascinating chess matches.

Very true, same with movies and music, super talented people are sometimes total d*cks!

This is an interesting point, the copy of Valdez 1 I watched on youtube was decent but I found it difficult to assess a lot of Rodrigo's work as he had to rush inside and throw a bunch of punches and was hard to see how many landed. It is not just the film quality but also the number of cameras and angles. Now every broadcast jumps to all sorts of useful angles in a fight, for example I was watching Fenech vs Nelson 1 and you could see all the war going on when in the corners or on the ropes. With many 70s fight films you simply don't get in that close.

Interesting though if we did include personal conduct outside the ring as part of the ranking criteria - which fighters might make the greatest gains, even pushing them to GOAT status - Floyd Patterson for one, perhaps? , lol.

Patterson and Barney Ross are the first 2 that come to mind.
On a pure "nice guy" scale, Anthony Crolla would score highly.

I don't find Monzon unimpressive per se. Just uninspiring.

I saw that first title fight against Nino Benvenuti live on ABC's Wide World Of Sports, it must have been very intimidating for Nino to have Carlos Monzon stalking him throughout their 15 round fight on Nov 7 1970. Man, That right hand that Carlos landed on Benvenuti was classic, it left Nino in a heap in round 12 for the full count.

How about the right hand counter that deposited Rodrigo Valdes on the canvas in round 14 of their first fight for the WBA and WBC Titles on June 26 1976 in Monte Carlo, Monaco? Monzon won by unanimous 15 round decision to unify both titles

I believe that Carlos Monzon was the no.1 contender, having not lost a fight since Oct 9 1964 when he lost a decision to countryman Alberto Massi, whom he defeated twice two years later to even the score. What impressed me is that he never got flustered in the ring, always remained focus to the job at hand. It was as if he always had the right strategy for his opponents, his lifelong trainer Amilcar Brusa would always scout his future opponents, together they came up with a game plan.

It's good to see a slight shift towards the Monzon appreciation where people are starting to accept what he was doing in the ring. When I first joined here, when the word Over Rated or a thread started, Almost half the forum it seemed like , would immediately say Monzon, along with Liston and some others , ,But his name was mentioned quite frequently . And him not having the flashy style is probably the reason.. It's funny because I have never heard anyone here saying Hagler is over rated.. The exciting style, those fast and accurate 4 punch combos etc ....

Brusa was an analytical man, a former boxer himself and wrestler who developed Monzon's style after Sandy Saddler and Archie Moore.. Also adding wrestling defensive turns and twists on the inside for defense. as Monzon was always on balance for the most part.. Sadler and Moore spent a lot of time around Luna Park as each of them had several fights there.
Monzon wasnt expected to do as well as he did at the start.. There was a lot of tough boxing around Brusa and Luna Park .. Monzon was often the underdog

    Hi Rich.
Two things : The biggest selling Italian newspaper headlines " Monzon who are you " week before fight.
There was an audible gasp from the crowd when the fighters squared up mid ring, apparently they wasn't expecting Nino to be at a height disadvantage !
    stay safe buddy.
